    Shots for Pups

Those that do their own Distemper/Parvo Shots. After the 3rd shot is given, do you give the one year booster shot every year or alternating so on and so on.

My Brittany Spaniel Male I just gave him his 3rd Distemper/Parvo last week. And come summer I will get his Rabies done and Neuter him.

Im just not sure if the Booster is recommend each year or not. Also How recommended is the kennel Cough Vaccine(Bordetella) really needed.

    Re: Shots for Pups

I would recommend giving the distemper/parvo every 3-4 weeks until the pup is 16 weeks old, regardless of how many shots it already got previously. This is because you do not know when the maternal antibodies are no longer in the pup, when the pup's own immune system is producing its own antibodies, and what the protection level is in the pup. Usually at 16 weeks this is when the pup's immune system is working well. I vaccinate annually after that. Some people do titers to see the antibody levels but the cost of shots is cheaper than the titer.

I would only give the bordetella if your pup is around other dogs frequently, such as doggy daycare, shows, dog parks, etc. and if this is the case booster every 6 months instead of annually. Otherwise, it's not really necessary or only give it annually if it's around other dogs sometimes.

Hes 12.5 weeks old and just got his 3rd distemper last week and got them on 3 week intervals, So his series are over with to not overdose him.

His next will be the rabies and will be done with his shots for a while.

    DOB 12-12-11
    First Shot 1-26-12
    second Shot 2-19
    Third Shot 3-10

Now just need to call vet to see his minimum age he will give the Rabies shot.

If you ever take your dog out where there are other dogs, the vet, parks, pet store, kennel cough is recommended. Also for the stay at the vet for neutering, it will probably be required. Most places that board, keep over, doggy daycare, require it. I also believe other vaccines should be boostered yearly. My cats on the other hand, are strictly indoor, and after 2 years in a row, I skip a few. As they can have reactions to the vaccines.

I know in my area, 6 months of age is when you need to get them licensed, and they need a rabies shot to be licensed. Hopefully that helps.

Not all neuters are stay overs, And i think vet here isnt, as my fathers cat was spayed and she was released same day once she woke up, sent home with meds.

When i get the Rabies shot, ill prolly get the Cough shot just for the sake he gets it same day.

    Re: Shots for Pups

At 12.5 weeks of age I would give another distemper/parvo shot at 16 weeks. You won't overdose the pup. Like I mentioned earlier, you won't know when the pup's immune system is working and you don't know when it no longer has the antibodies from mom. Mom's antibodies pretty much blocks the vaccine from fully activating the pup's immune system, that's why I recommend another dose.

The neutering won't be an overnight stay. For a young, male pup, the procedure itself will be over in less than 5 minutes. Unless the pup is cryptorchid, then it will take longer, and more costly. Low cost spay/neuter clinics in your area is cheaper than a vet's clinic.

Rabies over here is at 4 months old.

I want to get him His rabies and Neuter before Licensing him. By doing so the licenses is $12 a year rather $40. But cant do that till I get the papers stating so from vet..
