I'm sure its been asked and answered, but are ghosts and hypos the same? If not what are the visual differences? Pics if ya got them would be awesome, thanks.

Sorry I got no pic. Generally when people say hypo and ghost they are referring to the morph orange ghost because it's the most popular. There are other kinds of ghosts morphs but the seller will usually say green ghost or whatever the color ghost is. Hypo is short for hypomelanistic which means lacking of some or all dark pigment. This is why hypos and ghosts look like their always in shed. Hope this helps

Re: Ghost and Hypo the same?

Same thing. Although from what I understand there are a few different lines of the morph. Orange Ghost is one, not sure of the names of the others.

Someone with more knowledge than me can explain though, I'm sure .

Edit: Ah, someone got to it first! Told ya someone with more knowledge could explain it better xD

Then how come I'll see a snake go for $500 and it'll be label as hypo. But then I'll see a snake go for $200 and it be labeled ghost? Mind you these snakes were both male. It makes no sense to how much of a price difference the hypo is from the ghost. If its the same thing O_o

The only thing I can think of is if there is another gene present. A hypo/ghost male should go for about $200 whereas a Pastel Orange Ghost/Hypo will be about $500 for a male.

Were they het ghost by any chance? If they were het ghost I could see them being 200 and 500 if they were a GHOST. There are also some rarer kinds of hypo/ghost morphs that could fetch more dough. It's hard for me to say without seeing the adds you saw. Also it could just be someone trying to get rid of snakes quick for some reason and they offer them cheap. My guess would be you saw a het and thought it was full blown hypo.

I would say it is the addition of another gene. My Hypo Mojave male was around $500.

He is a Orange Ghost line Hypo:

I cannot think of a better looking snake for $500.

Re: Ghost and Hypo the same?

This is kind of a tricky question because an orange ghost is the same as a hypo but a true ghost not the same. A true ghost is a double recessive. True ghosts do however have hypo as part of the combo. They are hypo x axanthic. So to answer your question yes and no hypos are ghosts.

In Ball Pythons HYPO = GHOST.

That is why the True Ghost designation was put on the the Hypo Axanthic. It is confusing because Ghost in other snakes is a 2 gene combo.

A True Ghost Ball Python would be very expensive, if you could even buy one, so that is definitely not what he is seeing in the pricing here.
