Freezer Mod?

Hey guys i just recently bought a new chest freezer for f/t rodents so this is kinda what gave me the idea for this mod that i think would save people alot of money...

So on the label for the freezer it says that it only costs $25 a year to run bc its energy star. A refridgerator costs alot more right? So what if you plugged the freezer into a t-stat and ran the probe into tge freezer and set it for like 34degrees or whatever temps a fridge runs at? Then just use the freezer as a fridge and itll only cost you like $25 a year to run.
So my question is would this work?
I really dont think id actually do it but it sounds like itd save a ton of money since i remember reading an article somewhere that said a refridgerator was one of the things that burns the most electricity in your house...

Wouldn't work, there are multiple electric components that need constant power. Heating using a resistive element (like flexwatt/UTH's/Heat bulbs) is simple because all they do is turn electricity into heat. To cool something down is far more complex. There will at least be a compressor and possibly other electric components that certainly wouldn't be able to run off of a proportional thermostat. A on/off style thermostat might work better, but things like compressors usually need to run at times even when they are not actively cooling the unit. Compressors also generally have a duty cycle that prevents them from turning on or off at certain times and cutting or applying power could mess with these cycles.

I have read online about a guy who did this but the thermostat he used was wired in like the freezer one was. He measured the electrical use, and I think it ran for a total of like an hour a day

Refrigerators used to use a lot more electricity then they do today. Federal regulations set in place years ago have made then tremendously more efficient. Back in the day they used to say having one TV on was like having all the lights on in your house, but I believe the newer ones are also way more efficient as well.

Interesting, it was just a thought i had and then when i googled it i found something pretty close to what i was thinking... I like to share my "brilliant" ideas with people bc usually they dont end up being so "brilliant" lmao

I'm not saying that it couldn't be done, but it will take some electrical know how and serious modifications on both the freezer and thermostat.
