Unhappy Totally bummed, have to get a new engagement ring

I've been teary-eyed all day. I took my ring to two different jewelers to talk about my options. Turns out they both pretty much just offered me the scrap value for the ring. I spent so much time looking for the perfect simple ring and it turns out it's a diamond cracker

So...I have to go ring shopping again. I love the ring I picked out, so we decided to keep it as an extra ring and fill it with CZs. They will keep cracking/chipping, but at least they are cheap to replace and I can get different colors each time.

Just so everyone knows what to watch out for, this is my diamond cracker. It's not a tension setting, but it's that style. The problem is that it takes a lot to hold the stone in so it puts a lot of pressure on the stone, and the sides of the stone hit everything so it cracks/chips. Totally sucks. I love how unique and simple it is, and it has the euro band to keep it from spinning AND Blake gave it to me at his cancer benefit

Thank you very much! I absolutely love the band. I even considered getting a really crappy diamond to put in it, but both jewelers said I would be spending too much on that ring, one of them even told me not to do the CZ thing because I will have to pay to get it set each time The gold is worth a decent amount, but I really don't want to scrap it.

To make matters even worse, our wedding is in three months...ugh.

Good luck with your search. If it was my ring, I would get a good sturdy chain and hang the ring from it. Especially since it has sentimental value.

Don't know if you are totally against tension settings, but this guy really knows his stuff and he basically made my ring within an hour of my order. He's just a guy doing it in his basement now, but used to make high priced bike parts... maybe there is some sort of compromise to be had?

I'm confused; how can gold, which is soft, crack diamond, which is very very hard? Regardless, good luck with your search. Hopefully you can find something you're happy with in the end.

Awe, I'm sorry. Finding unique rings that don't cost a fortune is really hard. My engagement ring is nothing special on its own, it's the commitment that it symbolizes that makes it special. Best of luck in your search!

Don't feel too bad, after 25 years my wife is on her third wedding ring already due to losing them, and a couple of times where the diamonds just fell out. Thank goodness for insurance. After all, it's not the ring, but what it symbolizes that is important.

Those are pretty cool! I'm staying away from tension setting since they can't be resized and tend to lose/break diamonds. Mine isn't quite a tension setting since it has the metal connecting it under the diamond, but I still had to get it tightend 3 times in 2 years, you can't mess around with tension settings when they get loose! He's smart to make the stones smaller than the thickeness of the band. That will help keep the stones from getting chipped.

It's not exactly the ring, it's the fact that it puts a lot of pressure on the stone to hold it in and most of the stone is exposed to getting hit on things. Prongs save the stone from getting hit on things and they put hardly any pressure on the stone, most gently hold the stone. That's why I really don't want put anything but a diamond or a cz in this, they can handle getting beat up a bit. I have to put a .80c stone in it and there is no way I can find a cheap enough diamond to make it worth breaking/losing it again.

That's no joke! And very true, thank you.

Oh no that really stinks! Thank heavens for insurance is no kidding! You are very right about the meaning, I will keep that in mind! I'm feeling better about having to get a new ring, I suppose there are a lot of women that have to get new rings at some point or another.
