What's the deal with Burmese Pythons?

I was watching a SnakeBytestv episode (Arlington) and there were people selling Burmese Pythons. I thought they were banned? I thought you couldn't sell them? I'm missing something here. Please enlighten me.

I thought that they can't be transported over state lines or imported from overseas. Anything in state is ok to my knowledge?

The bill was passed, but not in affect for another 30 days or so I believe. Maybe more, maybe less, not 100% sure.

They can be sold and owned within state lines. Interstate transport and importation is the felony part. It's also not yet in effect.

I think the ban will be in effect later in this month or early April, I don't know a date. Even after they are banned from import and interstate trafficking, they will still be legal to own, breed, sell, and buy within a state as long it's within the laws of the state. Though that pretty much devalues breeding them anyway, as you can only have so many Burms dropping huge clutches before your state's market is completely oversaturated.

The 4 listed species (Burmese python, Afrocks, and Yellow Anaconda) have NOT been banned. They have been added to the list of Injurious Species on the Lacey Act. This is NOT a ban.

What it is, is a legal restriction on transportation, and that is all. The 4 will not be able to be legally transported across a State line. (Only zoos, educational institutions, and labs qualify to get a permit to transport them--not breeders or pet owners).

If you own one of these animals, and you have to move to a different State, you will have to rehome it, as taking it with you would violate the law, and the fine if you are caught is significant, with jail time a possibility.

So long as you do not transport them across a State line (whether from one State to another, or from outside of the country into a State), you are not in violation of that law. It is still legal to keep, breed, and sell them.
