Grey Banded King - On/Off feeding lately?

So lately my grey banded king has only ate once the past 4 weeks. She has refused food today, ate last wk and refused the 2 wks prior. I've had her since last may and she has always been a great eater. Currently i feed her two pinkies a wk. Shes probably just under or right around a yr now. Is this a normal thing for this type of snake? Is it the time of year?

Count your blessings she has continued to eat through most of the winter. If she is a year old I would suggest bumping up the mice to fuzzies. If she continues to fast you may want to cool her for a month or so. That usually gets them going again.

Re: Grey Banded King - On/Off feeding lately?

Thank you for the long awaited reply. I was planning on getting her on fuzzies until this happened. I live in Houston, TX so our winters are extremely mild (not sure if that matters) and I keep her temps constant 84-86 hot side, room temp cool side 72-75. Maybe I'm just comparing her too much to my corn which is a garbage disposal all year round.

How would i go about cooling her down for a month and bringing her back? Is that a good idea even though were into march?

You might try bumping the warm end up to about 90. I wouldn't cool her down. I'm thinking the prey you are giving her is to small. I have a king that is about a year or maybe a little over and he's eating two hoppers every 6 days. My warm end is 90 sometimes 92 depends on the room temp during the day. My cool end gets to about 72 at night to 77 during the day also depending on the room temp. Try a bigger food item and see if that entices her. are you feeding in the enclosure or out? I had to start feeding in the enclosure. He seemed to feel more secure in his home. anyways thats just me some people have there own methods.

If you use aspen for substrate try to use less of it over the heat pad that way the heat can penetrate through the aspen. That has also worked for me.

My king was off feed since October '11 and just started eating for me just a couple weeks ago. During that time I didn't cool him and he lost a total of about 15 grams (he's roughly ~170 grams now). He's now taking prey hesitantly, so I think your king will eat when she's ready.

Re: Grey Banded King - On/Off feeding lately?

Well she ate for me sat so all is good . I gave her a pretty good sized peach fuzzy. I think she must be a runt cause she doesn't seem to be growing very fast. Even the peach fuzzy seemed a challenge for her to get down at first but she did it. Ill crank up her uth to about 90. Thank you all.
