WATER DISH ideas

Hello, I recently purchased a BP and am now trying to make sure that it's environment is as happy of a place as possible.

my tank is super simple, i had one large exo terra hide on one side, a chinese food container hide on the warm side and a chinese food container for a water dish.

since those hides are so damn big it takes up like 66% of my tank and I dont have room to put my water dish back. what are some water dish ideas i have heard jars and what not i just want my snake to be happy, should I not use those hides if they take up too much space? getting a larger tank is not in the cards this week ( Tank is about 12x24x16 and the snake is born in 2011 (less than a year old)

as long as the cat dish is big enough for him to fit in?

or should I construct smaller DIY hides?

And how worried should I be about humidity, because I have no room for any sort of humid hide

I've never seen any of my snakes physically get into their water dishes except for the time I got mites from new snakes.

No idea how concerned about humidity you should be, do you use lamps?

The hides should be tight fitting for the snake, not large.

I get the water dishes from the dog section of Wal Mart. They are about $2 each (they are approx 6" in diameter) and I can get pink for the girls (lame I know). I also have the next size up, but they REALLY raise my humidity in the rack.

My friend has offered a jar to his BP full of water, something similar to an apple sauce jar. often I see the entire snake sitting in the jar with nothing more than his head poking out. I thought this might be common of BP's.

Also for humidity, should i cover the screen lid to my tank?

I only use a exoterra desert UTH and a 60w lightbulb for lighting and heating. The light bulb is to keep a "day" and "night" going and also to increase the temperature slightly

(I live in a cold house so at night all of my critters get cold, I have a Leopard gecko, a crested gecko and now a ball python) any tips for a cold house would also be appreciated

This is not common for a BP.

If you're using a glass tank with a screen top, the only way you'll be able to maintain humidity with out creating a swamp in the tank is by covering up to 3/4 of the screen. Lots of things work for this: Plastic Wrap, Tin Foil, Wet Towel, Glass cut to size at a framing shop. The choice is yours.

You need to have a thermostat or dimmer on that UTH. They can get hot enough to cause burn damage to your snake. Regular sun light / night time cycles from your bedroom window are enough for your BP. They don't need the 60W lightbulb. Sounds it yours could use a heat lamp to raise the ambient temp. See next entry.

I don't know about your geckos, but letting your BP get cold at night is like riding an express train to an RI, high stress, and non-feeding. Ideally your tank will have a warm side of about 90 degrees, and a cool side of no lower than 78 degrees. You also need some way to measure these temps.

Um no that is very bad. Sounds like a good way to kill your snake. You should probably tell your friend to stop that, like immediately...
