    Using Provent-A-Mite - Questions

Okay...The dreaded day finally came...I got mites. I have no idea where they came from, but it seemed like they showed up overnight. I noticed several snakes excessively soaking in their water bowls and decided to take a closer look. Upon close inspection, sure enough, I founds mites in the water bowls and on the snakes.

After finding them, I immediately ordered several cans of Provent-A-Mite. I followed the instructions on the can to a Tee. I cleaned EVERY encloser, hide, water bowl, etc. I then put down new news paper bedding, sprayed it with PAM, let it dry, and replaced the water bowl. I then placed the snake back in the tub.

This all happened on Saturday...Now today (Monday) I opened a few tubs to look at the snakes and I am still noticing some live mites under the snakes scales. Did I do something wrong? Am I being impatient? Is there anything else I should do? I want these things GONE!!!

    Please help!
    -Jordan

It isn't an instant kind of thing. It takes time, and probably another treatment with PAM (follow the directions on how often)

it does take time. you can kill the mites on your snake by giving him a bath and cleaning him with reptile spray by natural chemistry. worked like a charm for me

    Okay...So I'm just being impatient?

How about this. When a snake's tub has been treated W/ PAM, then the snake soils it's cage... Do I have to spray the new paper after I put it down? Just curious.

    Thanks!

First be patient, its gonna take a few weeks. Two, you are supposed to spray the tub, not the bedding, read the can closely. It should last a few weeks and then treat again.

    Three, be patient

I see...I don't think the can specified to spray the tub and not the substrate? Either way, when I change bedding, I will go ahead and spray the tub, then put the paper over it. Thanks for clarifying!

PAM will bond to whatever you spray it on. Per the Pro-Products website:

"Unlike all other products that stop working when or soon after they dry, Provent-a-Mite™ will bond to any treated surface and remain effective for up to 30 days or longer, continuously killing any potentially disease carrying mites or ticks. Once dry, Provent-a-Mite™ will not wash off and can be misted, wiped or washed without eliminating the effectiveness."

"Simply treat substrate, racks, enclosure openings, etc. once a month as directed to kill any potentially disease carrying mites or ticks before they can infect your reptiles."

I prefer to spray the paper (and yes, respray if you change paper), because that is the surface my BPs will come in contact with the most.

Keep in mind pam is a toxic poison. It should only be used as directed. Do not over use the stuff. It can kill a snake if used the wrong way. Mites can take some time to get rid of. I personally like using reptile relief cause its safe to spray on the animal as well as treating the cage. You can use reptile relief more often too if you need to. Again pam is a poison so be careful and be patient. Also if you use substrate i would switch to newspaper or paper towels during the treatment process. I would not treat and reuse substrate. Throw the old substrate away.

    Re: Using Provent-A-Mite - Questions

Thanks for the additional info guys! I may respray the actual tub when I change out the paper that was sprayed. I want it to last as long as possible. I may grab some reptile relief as well.

    Thanks again.

Double check the instructions on the PAM can. I'm not home, so I can't check myself, but I really don't think you're supposed to spray it on the bare plastic.
