Thin layer of aspen bedding instead of newspaper?

    Hi,

I currently use newspaper as substrate, but I am thinking of switching to a thin layer of aspen bedding for the sole reason of holding better humidity. How do i make sure the aspen bedding is moistened enough? I don't want to keep it too wet, just enough to raise the humidity a little bit. Do I just lightly mist the bedding a couple times a week? Also, how think of a layer is acceptable. I would like it to be less than a layer. Just enough to hold some humidity.

    Thanks

Aspen will hold more humidity than paper does but it does not hold tons. Cyprus holds more than aspen and coco coir (aka eco earth) more than that. I personally prefer coco myself it is cheaper than most (all I have access to). The thickness can vary depending on the set up. I use it in tanks, enclosures and rack. In the tank that has a screen top and looses humidity quickly I use lots on the cool end (2-4 inches) and not much on the hot end, 1/2 or so. The custom enclosures I use about 1/2 evenly with extra piled in the corners (my guys usually poop and pee in the corners) I usually clear a bit from under the hot hide it has some but not as much. The rack gets two scoops about 6 cups I guess and it moves about a lot.

I usually put about an ince of aspen down. In my tubs I have to mist it about 3-4 times a week and at first, just mist a little and put your lid back on, wait a while and see where your humidity is, then adjust from there. That way you know about how much to spray it down.
