UTH Soared to 105 degrees.. cant get it to come down?

Last night when I went to sleep it was reading 93.x like normal but this morning when I woke up it was reading 105! I have one of those low cost rheostats with 2 power slots and the low/med/high setting. The only thing is it's always been as low as it'll go. Any ideas? I know it's not the rheostat because I plugged a OTH to it and turned it all the way down and all the way up to test if it was working properly and it is.

Temperature fluctuations in the room could explain the difference. Those rheostats are highly inaccurate and the temps can fluctuate greatly depending on environmental variables... I'd recommend ditching the rheostat and picking up a thermostat. You can even go with the Hydrofarm thermostat from Amazon for about the same price as one of those rheostats and you'll get a lot better accuracy...

That could be what it is. someone might have kicked up the heat last night, it's just i've never had any problem with the rheostat till now and it had me worried. She was still on it so I'm assuming it wasn't too uncomfortable. I took it off the bottom of the tank and put it on the side for now though

any thermostat, imo rheostats aren't safe for uth's, you just found out why

rheostats only work if the room temps never change. You need a T-stat. Proportional types are the most versatile and the on off type work but can under certain conditions cause temp spikes.

T-Stat! If your strapped for cash, get the Hydrofarm T-stat on amazon. I have one for my BP and it works great so far while I save up for a herpstat/helix.

Totally agree with replacing the rheostat with the Hydrofarm T-sat. That is what I use, and trust me, $30 now will save you endless headaches. My apartment gets absolutely freezing at night, but my UTH has never dropped below 88 degrees on the coldest nights and I have it set for 91. And the only spike I see is to 91.5 right after I break down and turn my heater on in the room. It's wonderful.

The only "downside" to the Hydrofarm is I had to drill a hole in my vision enclosure to fit the probe into. But I actually see that as a flaw in the vision enclosure design. They should all have a little hole for a temp probe, that seems painfully obvious.

Unplug the UTH for about 2 hours, Keeping room temps up for the time being. Then turn back on and should be able to readjust the rehostat.

But look into a thermostat soon
