Thermostat setting for UTH

Curious what you guys set your UTH temp to, those with tanks, specifically. I currently have mine set at 93 and I'm wondering if that is too low when you take into account the substrate.

I put down about an inch of aspen so this certainly acts as some insulation. I have heat bulbs that provide ambient air temp, this makes the surface about 90 on the hot side, however its a few degrees cooler in the hide because its blocking the heat from above.

So I'd like to bump up the thermostat for the UTH up a bit which is right under the hide, but don't want to go too high and risk a burn should he decide to dig down and get directly on the glass.

right now im using a hydrofarm Tstat along with a digital thermometer. the Tstat prob is right on the uth and the digital prob is inside on the glass I have 1/4 inch coconut husk. I have the t-stat set to 96 at the moment and the temp of the glass never goes above 92. if your T-stat has a digital read out I would not trust it and back it up with a thermometer.

You should really check the temp on top of your substrate, and set it appropriately.

Probe placement will alter the amount of offset that you have. I am guessing you have place the probe on the heat source directly? This works well in fairly stable room temps I find in rooms that are cool placing the probe under the substrate over the uth gives more stable temps. internal placement like this the probe MUST be firmly fixed in place (hot melt glue works well) I usually will never set it over 94 and usually only 90-91.

As long as the surface temperature of the glass is below 100 degrees F you should be fine

if your T-stat has a digital read out I would not trust it and back it up with a thermometer.

Oh yeah its off. I use a temp gun to tell the real temp. Its about a full degree off.

Yes I have a temp gun that I use to check the temps. The probe is hot glued to the glass over the UTH. If I set it at 98 (under substrate) that makes it around 90 on top of the substrate outside of the hide and about 85 on the substrate inside the hide. Maybe I have too much bedding? I said its an inch, but now that I look its prob more like 2 inches.

Sounds like quite a lot of substrate I personally use very little on the hot side maybe 1/8 inch it moves around a lot but it absorbs when needed I set the T-stat at 91 and basically get 90-91 all the time. I 'bank' the substrate so I have over 2 inches on the cool side. This is what drives the humidity the moisture within this mass of substrate and the water bowl. You might give thought to dropping the temp and reducing the substrate it is safer if there is nothing within the enclosure (especially low areas) over 94.
