So I'm working on my new plywood rack as my melamine one is too squat. I'm making the ply one taller ( 1 x6 instead of 2 x 3), and it just donned on my how I'm going to attach the shelves. I don't have the capability to make dado cuts and the wood i've cut for the shelves is 15/32" thick. I'm worried i'll split the wood if i send screws in through the side so I test it out on some scrap. I predrilled two holes and sent the screws in, one side split one didn't.

Would 1 1/8" nails driven through 15/32" board into my shelves be enough to hold up a shelf holding one 32 qt tub?
