    Question about frozen thawed feeding??

I was feeding my spider ball python a frozen thawed mouse, and when she struck and began to constrict it. The stomach on the mouse tore open spilling out blood and guts. DIGUSTING!!! aha
Anyways the feeding went on like normal and I cleaned my ball off and put her away.
My question is, was there something I did wrong to cause this??
    THANKS

Sometimes when the mouse has freezer burn/damaged tissue, it will cause it to go partially rotted, and that softness will cause the mouse to burst upon feeding. I suggest vacuum freezing your rodents (Ziploc bags for 50 mice and pump are around $8) and storing them on a styrofoam tray in your freezer.

This has happened to me a few times, especially with pinkies. I don't have that problem with bigger rodents.

Also, try to put it in a ziploc bag and defrost it in boiling water that way. If you submerge the mouse in water, the tissue will become super soft and spongy, causing that mess all over again. I know all this from personal experience, trial and error.

    Good luck in future feedings

Re: Question about frozen thawed feeding??

AYe it just happens from time to time. I thaw mine in the refrigerator overnight and warm in hot water hit with a blow dryer to warm before feeding. I have had a couple smaller rodents pop but the bigger ones seem to thaw better

It can be caused by thawing too fast. I've had this happen a couple of times.

Yes, as stated, thawing too quickly. I thaw mine in warm, not hot, water for about 45 min and then warm them up with a blow dryer.

Also, sometimes the snake just squeezes extra hard and it happens. It really doesn't bother them any. My girl recently attacked her dinner four times over 20 minutes until it was covered in blood before she ate it. No apparent reason, never done it before, just went insane one night. If she went for it one more time, the belly would have burst and I would have been swearing at her.

I have heard that can happen if they are too hot inside as well.

I leave mine in the fridge over night, on the counter an hour before feeding, and then in warm water until its around 90 - than it gets blow dried. LOL

This happened to me once but lucky for me it was before I fed and it happened because I heated it up to fast. I started a new routine becasue of it. I put them in the fridge the night before, then in the morning before work I put them in the snake room to get to room temp during the day. Then at feeding time I heat the head of the f/t with an old hair dryer. That has worked pretty well for me so far.
