UTH/Thermostat questions

I'm getting an Ultratherm Heat Pad from Reptile Basics, I know they also carry a variety of thermostats. I've been reading about the necessity of having a thermostat to control the temperature, but I'm a little confused about how to attach the thermostat to the UTH. I understand that you can tape the thermostat probe to the heat pad with electrical tape, but what exactly does that do? Can anyone clarify? Is there some other connection that must be made between the thermostat and the UTH?

the thermostat plugs into the wall and then the uth plugs into the thermostat the thermostats probe tells the tstat how hot the uth is and if it goes over the powergoing into the uth is then adjusted appropriatly

all the tstat does is adjusts power going to the uth in simplist terms

pay attention to the stat that you get. some are just "plug and play" and some you need to manualy wire up..

What kind of thermostate are you thinking of getting? I also need one but don't know what kind to get. I'd like a dual zone, thermometer, humidity, and night drop built in, high quality for $100.00 . Likely not going to happen though, I'm thinking of settling for dual zone, thermometer, and night drop for $140.00.

Sorry, Hoathie, not trying to hijack your thread, but it is thermostat related, any thoughts on the proportional, on/off vs pulse. What is pulse and is this recommended or just utilize on/off?

I love my VE-300 havent had an issue yet very easy to set up and work with
Only sugestion I would make is use foil tape instead of electrical tape to hold you probe in place. Elecrtical tape will loose its sticky over time with the heat from the UTH

I have seen that Boaphile recommends using clear packing tape to tape the probe to flex watt, so I would think it would be good for taping it to a UTH as well.

If you just need something basic, order a Herpstat from Spyder Robotics. I just ordered mine a few days ago.

Between it and the VE-200 they seem to be the best bang for your buck proportional thermostats.

Between ON/OFF and proportional thermostats:

When the temperature rises to/above the set temperature, the ON/OFF type shuts off the power to the unit until it drops below, and then turns it back on. From what I have read this can cause small fluctuations in temperature.

Proportional units adjust the power to maintain a constant preset temperature.

**Please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't even have my Herpstat yet, and I've only had a BP for two weeks. Go easy on me.
