Spreading the reptile love to the new generations!
Not sure if this is the right place for this, sorry if it's not. So my aunt and uncle had their little baby boy a few days ago. I decided to pick out a book for my new baby cousin and decided on Verdi by Janell Cannon. It's a story of a baby GTP going through his color change. Not only do I think it's a good message and gorgeous art BUT also it will also expose him to reptiles at an early age and hopefully when he sees a snake he'll remember Verdi and not be closed minded to our scaly buddies. I plan on putting a photo of my GTP in the front along with a message to him. Hopefully my aunt and uncle aren't scared of snakes and will read it to him. I see a lot of you post pictures of your kids playing with your pets and I know there are people that do educational shows with reptiles for children. What else can we do to make sure that we spread our love of these cold blooded critters to the upcoming generations?

I know I was exposed to snakes through my grandfather's exotic pet store when I was a little girl. The entire family would work there on the weekends (he had his store at Trader's Village, a huge permanent flea marketish thing, and I would help out when I wanted, and wander around whenever I got bored. He knew over half the other store owners there, so I was always safe), and he sold snakes there, in addition to my uncle's big, sweet, 15 foot burm that was kept on display.
I remember playing with baby burms and using them as 'jewelry' when I was six (letting them wrap around my wrists and neck and walking around with them). Since I grew up with them, I never developed a fear of them. Then again, I was a fearless, if quiet, child, so I'm not sure how this would work with other kids.
Perhaps get the baby a plushie snake? One that they can hug and hold and is 'their' snakie?

I love that! I'll have to see if I can find one to include with the book.

I just looked up the book and I love it already! I want to order it and I don't have any children or family young enough for it.
I always loved Stella Luna as a kid too. No, it's not snakes, but another misunderstood critter.
PS. Oh hey look they are both by the same author!

I absolutely loved this book when I was younger! I had it by my bed and would read it literally every nite according to my mom lol. It is probably my earliest memory of snakes and one of the things that really got me into them. I definetly am going to get a GTP one day because of that book. Im pretty sure I still have it somewhere?

Great idea! This book is the reason behind my fascination with green snakes
