Plastic tubs

Does anyone of any tubs that are similar to the large cement mixing tubs that are a little bit deeper? The mixing tubs are generally 8" tall, rats ideally should be raised in enclosures that are at least 12" tall. Hoping to find something 2' x 3'x 1' tall, any ideas?

I use a rubbermaid and IRIS tub that are about a foot deep.

Rats have been raised in standard concrete tubs for many years with no issues.
They do not need 12" of standing room, they might like it but they don't NEED it

I don't need a 2000 square foot home either, but I'd sure as heck enjoy it over a 700 square foot apartment! Trying to just look for options....Looking for a tub that will fit an excercise wheel. Standing is such a part of their natural behavior, these are busy animals, would like to provide them with a way to keep in shape

I know of the Iris/Rubbermaid tubs, unfortunately to get the height with them, you lose the floor space of the cement tubs. Back to the drawing board!

One thing to remember is that most people build these racks with the lower height to accomodate being able to place the food pellets on top of the screen. If the tub is too tall you would need a food bowl, which in my experience causes for cleaning. LOL
It is all about personal preference, though.
I prefer a large house too!

A food hopper can be made for taller enclosures. I don't have one, but I don't mind cleaning the bowl...

Satomi, I love your creative problem solving with that tub!!

I'm thinking that if we could come up with a slightly taller tub, racks could just be built different to accommodate the height. Hoppers on top of the cage, water and all that could still be the same.

Just thinking here it is likely a bigger pain than it is worth but if you designed a 'rodent' rack could you stack 2 tubs open end to open end and cut a screen opening on the 'top' one? That would double the height with the same footprint. If the rack was designed to pinch the two together it should hold fine. Just a thought I know little about rats but I just thought hey that might work... It will take someone familiar with the tubs and familiar with rats to project if it is feasible or not, I can't, not enough experience.

Most taller tubs are the industrial storage kind. I haven't seen a clear tub that is taller than that. However, the industrial tubs are way strong and thick, so definitely no chew outs w/ those.

Also, maybe try thinking about making a hopper like this.

I want to do it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Seems like it will work perfectly for taller tubs.

Or perhaps make a well out of the wire mesh top and use as a hopper, (random google image)

If you're not keen on water bottles like mine, I've seen auto watering systems going into the sides of rat housing. I know going in from the top using a deep tub isn't always a great idea(unless using the well idea perhaps)....I work in a research lab and our rats have an auto watering system that go into the sides of their cage. Maybe get giant washers or something to insure no chew outs. And have the actual spout attached to the tub...
