    Snake died suddenly :(

Please help!! I had my pastel male for about four weeks, he ate once a week except for last week, which I noticed he started his shedding process. I made sure to not bother him, raised the humidity, always had great temperature, had everything great. Then tonight I came home and found him upside down dead with some blood next to his mouth on the paper towel....He didn't have any signs of a respiratory infection that I could see, no odd behavior....what could have caused this????

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Short of putting the body in a sealed bag in the fridge and getting a vet to do a necropsy it's really hard to tell sometimes.

Double check the thermostats and temps in case it was a heat spike or anything similar and try and think if you have used any chemicals or made any changes to the enclosure.

Thanks for responding....the only thing I did do was clean his tub with the 10% bleach to 90% water solution and made sure to rinse it very good when he went to the bathroom....I've been told and read that that was what to do....do you think that could have had any effect??

Cleaning it should have not had any thing to do with its death. If he was a hatchling he could have had some other issues.

    I am so sorry
Honestly, chances are you did absolutely everything right and he just wasn't healthy, for whatever reason. I sincerely hope you can find another snake to love. Even after so short a time, they can never be replaced, but don't let this experience get you discouraged.

    Re: Snake died suddenly :(

I am so sorry for your loss. I doubt it had anything to do with your cleaning of the tank. I normally spritz my tanks down with Clorox Clean-up, then rinse with water and dry thoroughly. None of my snakes have ever gotten sick from it, and for some reason my male goes out of his way to lick the glass every time I clean the tank. (I have to make sure I rinse his VERY well.) But no, I don't think you did anything wrong. Perhaps he had an internal parasite?

Again, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I lost my first snake a little over a year ago, and to be honest, I'm still not completely over it. Contact the breeder for sure and ask if he/she has had any other snakes get sick lately. Maybe that could shed some light on it. At the very least, it will let them know to be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary.

That sounds terrible. I've had my BP for almost half a year now, and I would hate to have him die on me. For the record, I only use a cap-ful of bleach when I clean out his tank. I'm not sure if that equates to less than what you used, but it seems to suffice.

Anyway, my condolences on your loss.
