finally joined the "dollar store hide" club, lol.

never thought i'd end up using dollar store bowls as hides for my girl, lol.
not that i didnt want to or anything, i just thought i'd be able to just upgrade sizes of plastic containers or buy 'em or whatever. recently i had fashioned temporary hides out of cardboard to make the 7 1/2 " x 6" x 2 1/2" one & lined the inside with paper towels to make them more snug fitting for her & thought those would hold her over til i was able to buy something of that size in plastic but yesterday ms. nyx here had to go & find the cardboard hides kryptonite...water!
& somehow i didnt think of that when making them?
so yeah she managed to completely demolish one of them by getting it directly over the water dish next to it & the paper towels soaked up the water then the cardboard became soaked & nyx had to go to the other side to get out of that cold wet mess.
so i had a few dollars & was going out anyways to do some grocery shopping but stopped first at the dollar store next door. after measuring every decent size looking plastic container i came to the bowls but the only ones big enough were the 7 1/2 or 8" diameter 44 oz. ones. i grabbed a 2 pck of solid blue ones & a couple small dish towels to stuff in 'em if they were too deep, ended up not needing those but now ms. nyx looks quite pleased to have solid homes again, lol.
if i'm able to get ahold of a camera anytime soon i'll take a picture & show ya guys her new "houses".
if only our houses could cost a couple dollars!

i drew the "door" with a sharpie on a side of the bowls to give myself lines to work with & then cut with scissors. i thought the plastic would be really hard to cut but it was surprisingly easy once i got past the lip around the edge of the bowls.

my local graocery store has a kitchen and i got some of their little plastic to go trays. theres 3 different sizes and the largeswt one fits a 600g bp in it. i just cut the hole with a knife then burn the edges smooth. they're kinda flimsy but they're completely black and super cheap i.e. free

I always use a soldiering iron to melt holes in my plastic tubs, bowls, and EVERYTHING else! They are under $10 and I use them constantly. If you have reptiles you should have a soldiering iron, wood burning tools work the same way if you can't find a soldiering iron.

i thought i was gonna have to contend with sharp edges after cutting but surprisingly the plastic cut smoothly & it was dull right off.
i'll eventually invest in a soldering iron though.
