    Scale rot?

We got our royal a new viv (Exo Terra Glass Terrarium), and since then have had problems with sheds so I started misting the cage every day even though we have a water bowl and moss and her shed was normal but after that I noticed that 'black scale' on her so didn't mist this time around and the next shed was awful again.
    Help please!!!
Betadine is on order incase needed.

    Re: Scale rot?

It's difficult to tell if the black spot is really the beginning of scale rot or not. Usually scale rot would be accompanied by a more reddish brown color around the edges of the scales instead of just black, but I would still keep an eye on it just in case. When you were misting was her substrate/bedding getting really wet?

A good alternative to misting every day that you might want to consider is a humid hide. Grab any appropriately sized plastic container, cut a hole in the lid that your bp can fit through, and then take all of the moss you already have and put it inside. Make sure it's damp but never soaking wet. Then your bp can use it during the shed cycle or any other time she feels like it, and she won't be laying on wet substrate all the time.

    Re: Scale rot?

That doesn't look like scale rot to me. That looks like an old scar. I have an old rescued ball python that has extensive scarring on its belly, and all the scars are wicked looking blackened scales.

Not the best picture of it, but you can see some of it here...

Thanks Erin I am going to give her another hide with the moss in and Thanks Judy, I wonder if it has always been there then and I never noticed? I am a worrier! She was a rescue but now is happy, healthy and eats well.

I don't think it looks like it either. Is there a person in your area with more experience than you have whom might take a look at it for you?

I have a couple of snake with what I call freckles on the belly. It looks something like that. Does it have a smell? Scale rot in my experience smells bad unpleasant it isn't wow that snake smells but with your nose close it smells wrong.

Sometimes I find that the belly scales seem to change under different lighting under daylight the might seem clean but under tungsten they seem to have more markings. That could also be why you missed it. Just a thought.

    Re: Scale rot?

    Hi kitedemon
It doesn't smell and to me it looks like a blood blister almost. It hasn't got any better or any worse and she is acting her usual self. Unfortunately my Vet has shut down and there isnt one for miles and miles now
I think I will wait for the next shed and see what happens. Thanks for the reply.
