would it be ok if i bred a ball with a ball (obviously) and then let the female lay on them til time to pip out, or is tht bad?

It's not impossible, however without perfect condition for the mother and babies it could go wrong. Here is a great thread by Quiet Tempest on maternal incubation.

It's definitely not easy, but it's doable. Make sure you have a really nice thermostat. If you are doing it this route to save money, it's not a good route to take. You need equipment that is just as nice as an incubator and humidity is going to be a bit more difficult than it would be in an incubator where you can control everything.

If you do decide to try this method, do be careful not to confuse ambient humidity with the humidity that is trapped within mom's coils (humidity in the enclosure could be around 70% but the pocket of air surrounding the eggs within mom's coils will be significantly higher). There's a tendency for people who are trying maternal incubation for the first time to try to turn their female's enclosure into an incubator. If you're going to try the maternal route, you definitely don't want to tamper with the temps/humidity in her enclosure UNLESS you're having trouble maintaining the right temps and suitable humidity for ball pythons.
