    One of my Tricks

Not many know about this that i do, but some do. Figured i would share it to thoses that would like to try it.

I dont cool my snakes, they stay 80-82 room temp and 88-91 hot sides all year long 24/7.

But The picture shows what i do every other day. Once i separate the males form females, i change the water with ice cold water and add in Ice Cubes. This will give them a cold bowl to wrap for few hours. Works like a Charm

Nice. It is funny all of the tricks that "we" do to breed our Ball Pythons. We actually don't do anything for ours. Our temps stay pretty constant year round and we do not cool. I am sure there is some natural cooling that happens, but we do not change our temps. So far we have had 100% breeding to laying success. Meaning that every female that has locked has gone to produce good clutches.
Its really cool seeing all of the diverse ways that we breed or maintain our animals.

I know females are given to cold-seeking behavior and bowl wrapping during the first half of the breeding season, but I'm curious to know whether you do this as a method of encouraging locks early on, or whether it's intended as more of a way to keep the females on track?

I do this more with females who will breed. I start pairing in October each year. And this is when i do the cold water with ice cubes. It can help push follicle development.

The mojo in picture had her first lock sept 2nd. and now already had 8 or 9 golf ball sized follicles. Went off food month ago and is close to ovulation. Everytime i change the water on the females with cold water and ice, within a hour i notice them laying by it, or wrapping it.

Its the next best thing to not cooling the snakes. Thus keeping their temps normal and they have a area to cool off themselves when wanted to induce breeding and follicle development.

    Re: One of my Tricks

    Rich,
Have you/could you temp gun the bowl and the female when you see one bowl wrapping. Im curious as to how cool the bowl gets and how cool the female can lower her temps.

Very creative and I have to admit to not ever seeing this technique before. I like hearing about how keepers have different practices that very from the traditional "cookie cutter" ways.

The bowl temp is 54F and lasts that cold for about 30mins. The mojo pictured above her water is now at 75F and her body temp has dropped to 75F now.

So it does seem to drop their body temps about 5-10F depending how close and tightly wrapping it.
