My experience with Sani-Chips

Hey!

After using my whole bag of aspen shavings, I decided to try the sanichips.

It looks better (IMO), and feels better to my touch (super fluffy), but WOW, it's like sand IT GETS EVERYWHERE!!! Not to mention that now my BP can 'clean' (expose the surface) of the tank, and this worries me a bit, out of fear that she might lay just above the UTH...

I've heard that it makes spot cleaning easier tho...

I've got mixed feelings, that's all.

I use aspen chip, it does get everywhere, you just have to be careful, and clean up spills right away so it doesn't track everywhere. As for the snake sitting on the UTH, it shouldn't be a problem if you are regulating your heat properly.

The hottest point in the tank should be between 88-92 degrees, which would be the glass above the UTH, not above the substrate. It shouldn't be a problem if the UTH is being regulated properly...good luck

I recently switched over all my tubs to sani-chips, and I haven't regretted it in the slightest. It does get everywhere, as you mentioned, but that's what vacuum cleaners are for.

As far as worrying about possible burns from your UTH or flexwatt, which is what I'm assuming you're concerned about, I don't think you should fret too much. Just make sure you get a temp gun reading from the exposed base of the enclosure, and as long as it reads under 90-93 on the hotspot, all should be well. I actually made the switch to sani-chips for the explicit purpose that if my BPs needed to burrow a bit in order to access a higher temperature than available on the surface of the aspen, newspaper, cypress, etc., it was possible. If you're still using a glass aquarium or anything comparable, a good prophylactic is to line the base with repti-carpet (or whatever it's called) and fill the sani-chip bedding over it.

Well, right now she doesn't have her UTH plugged in, as she is staying at my sisters apartment, which has perfect temps. But once she goes back to my place, I'll lower the temps on the t-stat a bit

holy electric bill batman!!!!!!! she keeps her house at 87?!?!?!?!?!?! i cringe at 72 in my house and only do it for the snakes lol. Im moving my snakes into my basement on the 1st where i have a wood burning fireplace for the bitter nebraska winters.
