Ready to breed?
I've got a normal female that just started wrapping around her water bowl. I know that's usually an indication of the breeding cycle starting. I want to breed her to my bumblebee, but she's only 900 grams. Seems like she's a little too light to breed this year. I have no problem waiting another year if I have to, any thoughts?

I'm still debating whether or not to breed a few of my 1300-1400g girls this season. 900 seems way too small after looking at some of my girls that size.

too small
too high of a risk of getting egg bound and dying
the first year that I had my female (she was 2 1/2 years old when I got her), she weighed 1200 grams; I waited until the second year. she weighed 1800 grams and gave me 7 healthy eggs.

Sounds like I'm waiting. Better safe then sorry.

Hey there!
900grams is too small. The way I look at it is if you breed to small you have a huge chance of serious injury and/ or death. I faced this decision myself this year and I would rather have to wait till the next breeding season than have to start all over with a new female. The rule is usually 1200grams or 500 grams per 12" of length. at 900 grams its too much of a risk IMO.
Cheers.

Being egg bound is when the female cannot pass the egg. It will kill both the female and all the eggs left inside, if not properly relieved (i.e. go to the vet).

you shouldnt have to wait another year, granted imo shes too small atm, i would wait until 1200g's or above. I wouldnt think she should have a problem going before spring.
