What do you do w soiled Rat Bedding?

I have recently pumped up my operation here to start selling surplus to pay for bedding and food.. even started to make a profit from advertising on CraigsList, which I am really excited about. Any little bit helps these days!

I have been putting my soiled bedding (I clean every 5 days) in black garbage bags, however the garbage man only comes once a week and my can can only hold one of the bags (not including house trash). I now have 3 or 4 bags piled up on the side of the house..

What do you guys do with your soiled bedding. I have some property that isn't used.. do you think its ok to just spread it out, or dig a hole and bury it? I'm open to any ideas.. it's starting to worry me, I hate having extra garbage on hand. Thanks!!!!

I started a mulch pile. You can add all your food garbage into it also and turn it every so often. If you have no need for mulch, you could put an ad up on craigslist for free mulch and an explanation of what it is and see if anyone would like it.

It's just wood shavings so it should break down. If you spread it, it will turn into a solid matt of shavings, not at all good for the ground, or very sightly. A pile should allow it to rot into useful "dirt" given some time.

I hate throwing it away as I don't feel that filling up a land fill with shavings is right.

Luckily, I live on a farm. We sell chicken manure every few months due to the pileup we get. I just throw the bedding in there. The heat from the manure breaks the shavings down within a day. I have also burned it before in a trash pit but thats a bit more of a hassle.

Compost, works great, turns GA red clay soil into a nice dark soil.

i have heard some people talk about giving it to others who trap. they use it as a cover scent not an attractant. i have not tried this my self though.
i am also looking for another avenue as i have to pay per bag to get rid of trash. 3.15 cents per 30lbs + bag i believe. i get rid of 2 bags a week in the trash. would be nice to save the 6.50 that equals another bag of shavings ya know...lol

We live in a rural area so my husband just burns all the discarded bedding I get.

I've been gold that it is also good fertilzer.

hmmmm, I guess living in the bay area I might have to start getting creative. I do have a little bit of land in my backyard so a compost pile might be feasible. My garbage can is tiny.. I can't even fit a full bag of bedding in it w my small kitchen trash bag. It's one or the other.

    CRAP!!! literally...

Mine goes in the trash. I have to use three bags to keep the weight down or the garbage men will not take them. I would not recommend putting a lot outside if you live close to neighbors. I can't imagine the smell will get better over time.
