How to set up thermostat and RHP ?

    Hey guys
About to get my Pro-products RHP in the mail this week, to put in my pvc enclosure. I had a few questions..

    a) First, my herpstat probe is currently stuck between my 20 gal glass tank and the sticky UTH.. Despite reading that it was okay to leave the paper on the UTH, I did not heed this warning and now I realize I have wasted $50 on a UTH that will be stuck on that 20 gal forever. My question is.. when I finally move my girl into the pvc enclosure, how would I go about removing the herpstat probe (which is foil taped to the glass bottom) and the sticky side of the UTH is covering everything.

Is there a way to remove the probe (when the time comes) without damaging the UTH? I heard if you pull it the uth off after sticking it, it will create hot spots in the future. Im going to have to buy a new uth for a new hatchling I am buying anyways, so I guess in the future I wont be stupid enough to take the paper off the sticky side of the UTH.

and b) My pvc enclosure has vents at the back at the top left and right. My RHP should be going on the right side, with the wire trailing out the right vent. My question is... how do I setup a thermostat with an RHP ? Where would I put the thermoSTAT probe? I have a bunch of ground cover (branches, hides, etc) in there in case she wants to climb up and bask. Where would I put the thermoMETER probes? I have three at the moment, so I would like to put one probe at the basking spot, one probe at ground level on the warm side and one probe at ground level on the cool side. Is this correct ?

    Cheers & thanks !!
    Matt

Re: How to set up thermostat and RHP ?

To remove the UTH, you can use some type of adhiesive or sticker remover, available at most auto parts stores. Here is the link to a thread showing exactly how to do it:

    http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...o-Remove-a-UTH!

When using a PVC cage with a RHP, most people that I know who have this type of set-up, run the thermostat probe in through one of the vents and use either small wire clamps and self-tapping screws or hot glue to to secure the wire to the cage so that the probe is approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the cage height from the floor. An easier way to remember it is to just mount it 3-4 inches from the floor of the cage for cages that are between 12-18 inches tall.
    Hope this helps...

YES!!! I can re-use it now!! Thanks a lot for that tip, really helped me out. Im broke and trying to start breeding so I need every dollar that I can save! Also, thanks for your tub-setup tutorial, it was realy informative. Alls I gotta do is get me some snakes now.

For the Thermostat probe, am I just putting it 3-4 inches from the floor & hot glue it to the side of the wall closest to the RHP? Or am I actually hot gluing some of it to the roof and letting it hang so its 3-5 inches from the floor. I think for the RHP, once I set it up, let it warm up and put in my thermometers, there shouldnt be too hard of a problem in order to get the right temps.

Another thing I wanted to know is, can I use the herpstat to monitor both my RHP for the PVC enclosure, AND for a UTH on a seperate hatchling tub? I'd imagine I have to fiddle around with the settings to get the temps right on both, but I think its do-able.

I would use a separate thermostat for the hatchling tub. The only time I would use one thermostat for multiple enclosures is when the enclosures and heat sources are identical in size and wattage ratings. Since you are planning on eventually breeding, you will need separate thermostats to run your incubator anyway...

Hey, heres an update and another question

I just got another herpstat as well as my RHP in the mail. My RHP cord fits fine through the vent of my PVC enclosure. The herpstat probe does not.

What can I do to safely make a larger hole in the back to fit the herpstat probe in my enclosure? I was thinking maybe a soldering tool, one of the ones I would need to purchase for making holes in tubs anyways. Can anyone give some advice on this? Is there any other way I could setup the herpstat probe ?

Nvm just used a solder, and made a perfect circular hole. Gonna let it air out for a few days then set it all up. I'll put up pics soon
