    a problem with my hygro's

i did a salt test on my first one, and it read -7, the test on my second one read -17, then last night i threw them both in the same bag, the one that read -7 was -8, and the one that read -17 was -13, i threw them on my desk to set up in the morning, and theyre within 2% of eachother, can they really be this inconsistant?

I believe Acu-Rite allows for a disparity of +/- 10% on the hygrometers. Here is the link to a thread that may help:

    Yes, they can.

Digital hygrometers (cheap ones) use a type of resistor to measure humidity. They are very sensitive but that is also the problem. Bent or broken wires(probe) poor joints (pc boards) dirt, dust, and liquids (urine) can all effect the accuracy and consistency of the units. reliable hygrometers that will stand up well to the conditions found inside a enclosure with a snake are IMO non existent.

There are very accurate units available but they are neither cheap nor easy to use and require pristine conditions, not something that can be kept with a snake and personally I'd buy myself a Blue Eyed Lucy before I bought an accurate hygrometer (about the same price).

I personally use an analogue dial type typically found in use with humidors. They are cheap and can be re-calibrated and somewhat tolerant of the snakes environment. The accuracy is ok out of the box and can be tested and calibrated every now and again. The only problem I have with them is the metal disk the magnet sticks to falls off and needs to be re-glued. I also keep the magnet outside the enclosure and replaced the weak one with a stronger one.

There is a strong bias against anything analogue digital is better right??? I don't think a sticky would ever happen. But thanks for the thought. It is the calibratable that makes it. There are calibratable digital 'puck' types too but the one I tried (very fussy with instruments) the calibration knob is on the front and is very easily moved I think my pokey male mojo thought it was a fun game to change it. That analogue one is cheaper and needs a screwdriver to move it.

The only thing to remember is the ambient humidity and humidity inside the hides might be a bit different (5% maybe more) of course 5% off isn't really an issue... I really have a hard time with this but it is still true.

Wow, I'm defiantly going to try these. How do you calibrate them?
