so, i made an impulse buy...

so i was at the show today, and i came across this beautiful little red tail boa female, and i immediatly fell in love. i bought her for $20, from M and T Dragons out of spokane, WA. she was born on 7/9/11. i had no intention of buying anything really, and i had no equipment at my house for her, so after i bought her, i immediatly bought a heat pad, and a reptitemp rheostat, and a hide. then i rushed to walmart, bought a 25qt tub, and a thermo/hygro. i have the tub setup with newspaper for now, and im still in the process of setting her temps, so she's currently in the cage with my bp, in her own container. and i know thats not a good idea, but i checked her out and she has NO mites, and was making NO noises whatsoever, and as soon as the temps are stable, she will be moved to the tub, which is in a different room. today was also feeding day for her so i bought her a mouse, but no luck yet since she most likely stressed, although she wasnt at all flighty when i was handling her, active, but not flighty. i snapped a few picture of her just now, but i will get more once she gets settled. tell me what you guys think! (and please dont ream me on the impulsiveness)

Sometimes, it happens. I got caught off-guard with an impulse buy once, and had to rush around to get an enclosure set up. Now, I keep a couple of spare tubs in the closet with heat pads, hides, water bowls, and a couple of thermostats. My Madagascar Ground Boa is currently living in one as a Quarantine enclosure while I get his 75gal tank set up.
Your new little girl has a nice contrast in her pattern. Congratulations!!!

I love her pattern. Boas are great!

I can understand implus buys. My first BP was one I bought after I went into the pet store for dog food. I had done some research before hand, but it was definately an implus buy.

thanks guys, im definitly gonna stock up on tubs and stuff when i get the chance so i can already have the stuff at home. there was one other female and two males for the same price that i wouldnt have bought, but this one completly caught my eye, and i had to have her, and although the next week is gonna be more stressful on her thatn most snakes, im super happy i got her

I've found that boas are pretty adaptable so you might be surprised. My first one was extremely mad about being shipped when I got her, but after 2 days she was fine with being handled and ate like a champ.

thats good to know, since i have a live mouse, should i try to feed her evry day from here? or would that be too stressful? last feeding was on the 10th

Now THAT is a boa I wouldn't mind having! There is something about her markings that I am totally loving!

Of course impulse buys should not be a regular thing, but as long as you know what you're getting into it doesn't hurt. I know it sounds weird, but I think there are some snakes that we are 'meant' to have. I had a similar experience with a baby boa at an expo that looked as normal as the others on display, but she caught my eye and I instantly fell in love with her. Now, two years later, that 'normal' boa has grown into one of the most gorgeous boas I've ever laid eyes on, and my love for her has only grown! I hope you have a similar experience with your new little one. Keep us updated with pics!

thats good to know, since i have a live mouse, should i try to feed her evry day from here? or would that be too stressful? last feeding was on the 10th

I wouldn't offer every day. Give her 2-3 days to settle in and then try. I know I completely freaked my first boa out when I tried to feed her for the first time. She was not fond of the floating rat pup at all and spent 10-15 mintues hissing at me from the corner of her cage. My male is a little different, I'm lucky if I get the lid off his tank before he starts trying to grab the hopper mouse. Boas tend to have strong feeding responses so you shouldn't have a problem if you give her a little time to settle in.

hopefully tommorrow i'll have her temps and humidity stable so i can put her in her own enclosure, i kinda feel bad that shes in a tupperware container in my bp's cage, but the conditions for the two are almost identical, so it was really my only option, but i think i'll try again on monday or tuesday to feed her
