Ive bred females at 1200g+.
Theres no right or wrong way to breed them, if you do it right and watch your females youll know. No matter what weight you start off with, they will gain good 3-500g by time they ovulate.

Re: what age/weight was your female when you first bred her???
I have bred females of all sizes and ages to me the important thing is the combination of both, I have had female bred at 18 months weighing at 1500 grams or more and I have bred 4 years old female at 1200 grams and it look like this season I am finally gonna be breeding a 5 years old female for the first time.

Yes I would breed an 18mo old female at 1500g

To me age is the most important thing.
3 years minimum for the female to reach full sexual maturity to reduce the risk of problems like egg binding.
If the female was 3 years and 1200g yes I would breed her. She still has several months of food yet before she ovulates.

From my experiance when in doubt wait an extra year, you will get better clutch in size, number and survival of the embryos/hatchling. The added benefit is she will have had an extra year of growth meaning that when she does breed she will have more reserves and will recover faster.

This is the biggest rumor put out for some reason. Females will become egg bound at any age, and or size. Health of the animal determines if they can develop eggs and have the reserves enough to make it to D-day and push them out or not.

A female that reaches 1500 grams at 18 months old is well fed and should do fine breeding and dropping healthy eggs, especially if she eats well during breeding season.

I have bred a female as low as 1300g, but she was at least 3 years old.
