    male or female? (popping pics)

Title says it all, got 2 normals as rescues from the local zookeeper who also does reptile rescue in his free time. He didn't probe or pop them and was just guessing that one was a male and the other a female from their spurs... The other one is in shed so I'm not messing with it yet, but I popped the other one and am pretty sure it's a female as her scent glands are popped out but I can't get any hemipenes.

I know the pics aren't too good for this sort of thing but it's then best we can get with current camera lense. Let me know what you think.

Re: male or female? (popping pics)

I dont have a ton of experience. Ive only watched videos, seen pictures and popped my own ball python, but that looks like a female to me. If it isnt, then I need to start questioning my own snakes sexuality again. I dont see any hemepenes and it doesnt look like a whole lot more pressure will change that. The vents pretty far out.

Just my 2 cents, but I think youve got a little lady on your hands = P

I would try again, it looks like you didn't pop enough. But from the last picture it DOES look like a girl, I would just make sure one more time!

I second that notion. I popped mine a good four or five times just to make sure I wasnt jumping to an incorrect conclusion. Your absolutely right jess. Best to make certain.

female, but like they said, do it again to make sure, and if you take pics of the second pop, take them from a different angle and out of direct light

Looks like a female. Instead of pressing or pushing straight up the middle with your left thumb...move your thumb off to each side where the hemipenes would be and "roll" your thumb up to the cloaca...makes it much easier to get the hemipenes everted....

In my honest opinion, that snake looks too big to be popped 100% accurately. I'm not even seeing the scent glands. Even a female would have 2 roundish pink protrusions on each side that look a bit more fleshy. It also looks like you are not applying enough pressure for such a thick tail.

Try rubbing in and downward rather hard over and over a few times from the tail to the vent with that thumb to work the hemipenes out if there are any.

If you have already done this and you are positive that you applied plenty of pressure and nothing came out, then I'd probe.

Thanks for the input guys. To be honest I've successfully popped males before so I think I know that it feels like I popped her correctly, but on the other hand I'm far from an expert so I could totally be wrong. Of course I plan on trying again though to make sure but she ate after those pics were taken and I checked on her today and she decided she wants to shed so it'll be a while before I mess with her again.
