Hello im new to the forum...i have 1.1 pastels and a few normal ball pythons my question is...im getting into the piebalds and i was wondering how their genetics worked and what to get next....does a piebald x albino = albino pieds? where should i go with some pied projects... thanks

No, you would need a strain of each mutation, for example:

albino het pied x normal het pied het albino

My advice is to read, research, read, and then do more research even when you think you got things down! There's always something to learn about ball morphs, genetics, combos, and breeding, and it's good to know all you can before jumping into breeding yourself.

Pieds are a recessive gene therefore you need the gene on both ends. If you breed a pied to an albino you will produce double hets. Meaning the babies will look normal but hold both genes. If you breed the double hets together then you have a shot at albino pieds. My suggestion is to do all the homework and research you can on ball genetics. A good starting place would be to google ball python morph wizard and play around with that. It will get ya in the right direction. Also search this forum for helpful posts. And remember just when ya think ya know it all ya find out you dont know as much as ya thought lol. I never paid attention in school to genetics. But ball pythons taught me genetics lol

jeez you guys are fast....any suggestions on what to start with with a few gs to burn off....id really like to get more into ball pythons as the money is not in my cornsnakes like it was 6 years ago

Personally I would do more.research and not jump into anything until you fully understand genetics. Especially recessive genes....there are the most difficult to understand when first starting. There is plenty to read on the topic on this site, just use the search box.

How long have you been keeping BPs?

My suggestion would be to hold off throwing down hundreds/thousands of dollars into morphs before you really get a feel for them and to really realize if you want to be serious in breeding BPs.

Know that breeding BPs isn't an instant or easy way to get some fast cash, it takes a lot of time and patience (I would assume you know this already from your corns if you've been breeding them -unassumingly- for years). Take your time and do more research.

I would suggest starting with the basics. Heterozygous and Homozygous. Then you will see there is no difference between dom, co-dom, and recessive besides how they look. Genetically they all work the same.

thanks ive had a few ball pythons scattered in with no breeding projects for 5- 10 years - i think i have been confusing - i understand genetics fairly well but what i struggle with is what morphs are recessive, co dom, etc...those wizards are helpful and i think i will be able to get a better hold on the situation -
ps. im aware that breeding does not = quick cash...raising up babies from generation to generation takes way too long....i wish it was faster though :p

I am no expert or anything in fact I am just starting out... But may I suggest looking at a genetic calculator maybe.
