Piebalds-first project
Hey hey hey,
So I'm a little excited. I have just picked up a 100% het pied male(proven) and a 66% female (virgin). The male has had a clutch with 3 out of 7 pieds, and the female in question came from a clutch of 5 where 3 were bred and only one was proven. The female has the "train track" marking, but I know enough and that doesnt mean anything. I'm going to put them together this year and hope for the best. So here is my question. If I produce nothing but visible normals, does that make them 66% hets? The 100% is a guarantee, and the 66% is about as close to a guarantee as it comes...... so, if I play the odds, I should have a 25% chance of a piebald, right? Thanks.

Re: Piebalds-first project
If you produce nothing but visual normals, your hatchlings are 50% het pied. You can't claim 66% het because the female is not proven to be het. IF she is a het, then yes, you have a 25% chance per egg for pieds.

To make sure I cover all the bases I'll start at the beginning.
66% hets come from breeding a 100% het to a 100% het. This is because 2 out of 3 normals will be hets.
You are playing the odds breeding your 100% het to your 66% het and it may take a few tries before you either prove her or give up.
When you breed your hets together, I would probably sell the normals as 50% hets, because until proven your 66% het should be considered a normal. The exact percentage I believe would be somewhere between 50 and 66%. You can't/shouldn't sell them as 66% hets unless the female proves to be het.
If she is het then you do have a 1 in 4 chance per egg of getting a pied.
I hope that helps.

Re: Piebalds-first project
This is how I learned about this het thing. I was told
Visual pied x normal = 100% pieds
100% pied x 100% pied = a possible chance of hitting something
Het x to possible or % besides 100% = good luck on telling. You would pretty much have to keep the whole clutch if you didn't hit on a visual.
Basically it's all gamble, luck, and time.

I am going to use this thread and keep posting up. As soon as they lock, I will take some pics, and follow until that great day when I pull a pied from a clutch. Wish me some luck! Lol..

Good luck, I will be breeding my pair of 100% het pieds this year. I hope I get a visual. It will be frustrating to try year after year only hitting normals. If I don't get any visuals I will be selling all of my hatchlings as normals.
