    Unproven Hets question

Okay breeders, if you have hets that you can't prove, do you just keep them to breed as normals? Or is that too iffy?

It all depends, is it 50% possible, 66% het or 100% when you do buy a het its always good to ask the breeder what was the pairing for exp. Clown x normal. That whole clutch 100% het , but different pairing equal different things, if your het isn't proving out just give it another try

It's really up to the breeder and their needs, if they have a need for normal females in their breeding projects they keep them if not they sell them as normal once they have been disproved.

I am in the process of trying to prove out several poss het females this season 10 of them in total, all the ones that will not prove out will be made available as I do not need additional normal females (Trying to keep the number of normal under 5)

The 2 I'm talking about were picked up at an expo as 100% het ghosts. I have no reason to doubt what the breeder said, but I have no reason to trust him either, lol. I think we'll be keeping them either way (my son picked them out) but I didn't know if they could be bred as normals if there was a possibility they were hets.

If after several breeding attempts they do not prove this mean 1 or both animal are normal and not hets.

With het to het breeding it can take several years and breeding attempts to actually produce a visual.

even if they prove to be hets, why couldn't you use them as normals?

I had a clutch of 5 good eggs that just hatched out. the breeding was a female mojave to a male clown. I didn't produce ANY mojaves. they all were 100% het clowns. so you can't go off of one breeding thinking it's not proving out.

Good point. I just didn't know if, down the line somewhere, a het could create some genetic confusion.

    Re: Unproven Hets question

Hets only provide genetic confusion if you do not keep track of their lineage and children. If they are 100% het ghost, and I hope you got a guarantee from the breeder even though it takes time to prove, you WILL have 2 animals that each have a ghost gene. Unfortunately, if you breed them to each other, their normal babies will only 66% chance for het and not 100%, but hypothetically 25% of their children will be ghosts! Just be persistent, and set yourself a number of clutches where you might give up assuming they are hets. (although, you could have 100% het animals and never ever produce a visual, the odds are just very low).

    Re: Unproven Hets question

So I have a het pied pair I bought from a guy on craigs list, I got the pair for $150. They have nice pied markers or train tracks but I know those aren't always a sure thing. The guy I bought them from was a descent guy gave me his number and email so if i had any question comments or concerns i could call. The pair didn't come with paper work and they were 2008 and he hadn't tried to breed them yet. I'm going to try and breed them this year but my question is if they don't produce pieds should I try again next year or give up and sell the male off as a normal and keep the female as a normal breeder?

yes, tried again, you have a 25% chance per egg of producing a visual. I had a 50% chance per egg on producing a mojave and I had 5 eggs and didn't get any, it happens, don't think you won't get any. if you get a desent size clutch, you have a very good chance. and you could end up with a few, it not try again
