Just getting started.... Have a few questions

Hi Everyone!!! Im just getting started in breeding ball pythons. I guess my main question is what snakes would everyone recomend to get first to start with?? Should I get hets, not hets, a mixture? what? I don't want my first clutch to be all normals or normal looking hets either Im hoping for something cool at least!!! Help me out!!!

I would definitely get not hets.

just get the ones you like and want to produce more of. or if you have a multi gene favorite then you can get base morphs and breed those together and eventually breed more and get the morph you want. i like pastels so i started with a pastel x normal and will go on from there. but you can start anywhere you want.

Okay, because I know for sure I want a mojave.... they are my favorite... I seen a snake at the daytona show that I thought was just sooo beautiful, which was a mojave axanthic.... If i breed a mojave with a het axanthic will I get any visible axanthics??

I also have had an offer for a male het pied, and het albino.... what do you think of those?

You'd have to breed a mojave het axantic to a het axantic to possibly get a mojave axantic, or visible axantics. To get a recessive, both parents need to carry the gene.

honestly it depends on what your budget is and what morphs you like.
Some hets can be VERY expensive. Play around on "World of Ball Pythons"search through the morph lists, play with the gene calculator and see what you like then go to kingsnake.com and see whats available and whats in your budget. Thats were i would start if i were you.

Just to explain, a het animals means it is heterozygous for that gene - genes (usually) come in pairs and 1 out of 2 in that set is axanthic. or pie bald, or whatever. Recessive morphs require the gene to be homozygous, having 2 of that gene, to be "visual". Breeding a normal to a het would result in 50% possible hets (meaning hypothetically the het mama passed on her het gene to half of her kids, but you can't know which ones because they arent visual.)

Think of het genes being "hidden" genes, but when you get one from each parent in the same baby, it becomes visual because the baby is homozygous

Hets are a lot more complicated than dominant and codominant genes. I would start with those first. Get 1.1 mojaves or 1.0 lesser 0.1 mojave or even 1.1 lesser and aim for BELs (blue eyed lucys). I would do either lesser x lesser or lesser x butter as they made the whitest least "dirty" bels.


Its really up to you though get what you like.

I also recommend not starting with recessive genes, unless you get a pair of em to make more.
