I use two Hydrofarm ($26 on amazon), one Johnsons ($95 on RBI.com) and a Herpstat ($118 on coldbloodedcages.com) and all of them work decently, even the hydrofarm. I may upgrade in time, but I'd say it works about the same as the Johnsons. I'll probably replace them at least once every year or two since the lifespan of the probe is not listed, but it works well.

Edit: the Herpstat is by far my favorite because it's proportional....

    No.

You are better off using a dimmer than buying a cheap thermostat in my opinion. But, to use a dimmer you need to be really responsible and check it all the day to make sure the temps are right, and if you live in a house where the temp fluctuates it's not going to work. Using a cheap dimmer is just asking for trouble. I was using one and a friend of mine told me to put a dimmer on as back up. A couple weeks later my thermostat melted, but the dimmer shut everything off. Imagine what would have happened to my snakes if that thermostat wasn't backed up by the dimmer.

The cheapest I would go for a thermostat is a Johnson or Rancho and they are around $70. I use Rancho and Helix.
