Breeding
I have been reading and probably missed it, but I was wondering if you were looking to breed a normal to morph what is ideal; a normal male or normal female?
I eventually want to buy a pied and I already have a male and female "dinker" and was wondering if I should look for a male or female Pied.

Re: Breeding
Its always best to have the female to be the normal if there has to be a normal involved.
A Pied x Het Pied or breeding would be choice if thats what your trying to figure out. Cause when it comes down to it, female normals actually retain value since you can plug any morph male and get babies.
So in this case the male should be the pied.
A normal male virtually serves no purpose when it comes to breeding and people usually see it as a waste to breed any normal male to a morph female, unless its a dinker male.

kyote19 pretty much answered your question, I think. Males tend to be much less expensive than females, so breeders who aren't looking to spend a ton of money on a morph female will breed a normal female to a male morph. If you are looking to breed Pieds, I'd go with the male Pied and buy a female het Pied (they're not too much more than a normal female anyway).

Is this normal male/female debate about a true normal or a visual debate? For example, I totally see the sense in a co-dom male to normal female, but with recessive genes, neither animal can be a true normal for you to produce visual (homozygous) offspring. When it comes to recessive genes, I would think you would want the female to be homozygous and the male be heterozygous. I say this because a female takes 2 to 3 years to mature and a male takes 1 year to 18 months. If the male is the het, then he can be replaced by a homozygous male offspring and you will have both a male and female that are homozygous in less time than having to replace a heterozygous female with a homozygous female offspring. Just my two cents.
