How do you guys work with Temp?
I am using the Reptile Basic rack system.
I have a snake room with a heater. The whole winter, I kept the room temp at 80. Which inside the tub will be 83 and the hot spot under the belly will be 89.
This works perfect for me until the summer.
I found all of my bps at the cold side one day, and check the temp inside. It is over 100. I freak out.
I live in North CA. San Francisco area. We don't get too hot in summer.
Now my heater will shut off once it which 80 in the room. I guess it go over it during the day. So I set the Herpstat Thermostat 5 degree lower. Which works perfect during the day.
I just went to check at night. the hot spot is down to 84 right now at night, and my heater is on at night because it is lower than 80 in the room.
So what you guys do in the summer to keep the temp? I can't put a AC during the day and a heater at night.
Thanks

I don't get it, why is it that your heating temperature changes despite you having a herpstat thermostat hooked up? And going over your set temperature? The only reason it would go over that is if that is your snake room temperature. And if thats the case playing with the herpstat shouldnt work. I have daytime highs of 90 and night time lows of 70 in my room, but with thermostats the ambient temp is kept at 80-85, hotspot at 90-92. Even with the drop in temps. Because when the temperature is high, it just puts less power through the heaters with proportional ones, and kicks in less often with the on/off ones. If my room temps get up to 90, my heaters would be barely powered and cooling for the room kicks in.
What heating are you using and hows the herpstat connected? Where is it measuring?

Thinking in terms of heat tape and a tub, with the probe outside the tub, the only reason I could think of which is giving you so much trouble is that in the winter your temps are so low and tubs so thick that between the thermostat probe and the inside tub surface, much of the heat is lost. And so the thermostat is keeping the probe at say, 100, while the inside is maintained at 90. And when the temps go back up in the summer, the heat gets lost very slowly since the temperature difference is less and it all gets through, sending the temperatures sky high again.
The other possibility I can think of so far is a faulty herpstat. But we would need to know a little more on your heating/thermostat setup to understand. At least I would. Hopefully someone else has better knowledge on this

Thank you very much.
I wish mine work the way like yours.
My heater is those oil power heater. It works perfect. It will go off during the day and come back up at night.
My rack, is 3 month old from reptile basic, almost new. The temp never stay the same, changing every day. And every tub has different temp. I have 2 of them. Both 3 month old, both the same problem.
Every tub inside the rack has different temp. From 82 to 90 at th hot spot. I don't know why. Pain at the neck!
Thanks

Re: How do you guys work with Temp?
Is the probe directly on the heat tape? I have 3 RBI racks and was having the same problem I redid the probe and put it directly on the heat tape...All 3 racks are controlled by 1 VE-300 that fixed the problem now theres only 1 or 2 degree difference between the bottom and top tub. Hope this helps.

Are you using a rack system? I live in the Bay Area and I am fine with just setting my temps and leaving it alone. I used to live in San Francisco and I didn't have any problems either. Perhaps it is where you're placing the probe.

I agree with the above. It sounds like a probe issue. Even when my temps in my room go up my thermostat keeps the temps proper. The only one I have issues with is my QT rack and that's because it's on a rheostat. I check the room a bunch throughout the day but the Herpstat never changes. I have an open rack design but I also have a heated room. An oil heater sounds like a bad idea during the summer. It takes a long time to heat and cool. You might try a small ceramic forced air heater for the warmer months. I use one all the time because they are efficient and can quickly change the temp one way or the other depending on how it is set. An oil heater is much more suited for keeping a steady temp in the colder months because the oil retains the heat.

B

Thanks. It is directly on the type.

I will play with the probe a bit. See if I can change anything. Also ordered a new Herpstat Thermostat set 4. So I can have 4 different temp.
