Look what I found on the side of the road

So i was headed out for some fishing with the wife when w saw a huge turtle on the side of the road. I had a feeling she was laying eggs but my wife really thought she was gonna get hit by a car. So I moved and saw the eggs. I quickly put her back. Boy was she not happy with me!

That is cool, but you should call fish and wildlife or someone who can move her eggs. When the babies hatch they will wander out in the road and get hit. That would be so interesting to incubate eggs like that. I am not up on my turtles, do you know what kind she is?

It was a snapper but I don't think they would have moved them as this was in a nature conservatory.

I have never seen a wild turtle in Alberta. The winters here are extremely cold, -40C not uncommon. Come to think of it I have never seen a wild turtle all my life in Canada. Don't get me wrong, there are turtles here, somewhere.

Re: Look what I found on the side of the road

It looks like a common snapper to me, and they have amazingly slow metabolisms, I am sure they can deal with drops in temperature, but yes the eggs are in a terrible spot... They will get nailed by cars when they hatch...

Id suggest taking the eggs away from the side of road and mimic the hole the female made and put the eggs back in. Since she wont return to them. This will save them and allow them to hatch.

Of course I am sure you know this, but dont forget to keep the eggs oriented in the same positions if you move em!

I never returned to move them as my thought was the mother put them their because of the heat from the pavement. These turtles have thrived for years, I think I'll let mother nature do her thing. The eggs were very close to a pool of water and the babies, in theory, will make their way straight to the water when they hatch.
