    What size uth?

I'm getting a 10 gallon tank for the BP baby I'm getting..I'm going to go with a ultratherm uth from reptile basics but I'm not quite sure what size to get....a little help please? I'm not sure if its supposed to cover the whole bottom of the tank or half or what?

not sure about those UTH but I know the zoo meds and other brands usually have a tank size on them.
My 20L I bought covers maybe 1/4 of the tank bottom. I use it right below the Hot hide.

    Re: What size uth?

BPs need a thermal gradient. You should get a UTH that covers a little less than half of the tank. Any bigger and the snake will get cooked. Make sure NOT to get a Zilla UTH, as all of the ones I have gotten from them have overheated, and melted onto the bottom of the tank. Get a Zoo-Med one if possible.

    Hope this helps!

Also look into a thermostat and thermometer

    Thermostat:

I put the probe between the Glass and the UTH

    Thermometer:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BO8CUE

I put the probe on the glass inside the tank and the hot hide right over it and the UTH

If you let the UTH run on its own you run the risk of it getting way to hot

Okay Thanks guys. Now the uth goes in the tank on the bottom under the substrate correct?

Okay that's one thing I was confused about...even though it sounds like common sense.

Yeah like I posted earlier put the probe of the thermostat between the uth and bottom of the tank. Then your thermometer probe goes on the inside glass right above the uth.
You want to make sure the glass isn't to hot in case your snake burrows down to it.

    Re: What size uth?

i used to have a exo terra heat wave 'rainforest' heat pad but the wattage was too low and it wouldnt heat up high enough. i even tried it without the thermostat and it still didnt get warm enough so i ended up with a exo terra desert and i've got no complaints. turns out the desert ones have higher heat output (wattage).
i'm gonna invest in those reptilebasics ultratherms when i upgrade my snake's cage to an adult size.
as for size get one that covers no less then 1/3 to no more then 1/2 of the bottom of your cage.
the thermostat probe goes between the u.t.h and the bottom of the cage.
the thermometer probe goes inside directly over the u.t.h.
but...i use a temp gun to measure my temps so i dont have any wires/cords dangling anywhere inside the cage here. snakes can get tangled in them.
i have that exact same accu-rite and snipped the cord off mine cuz i only need it to measure humidity which it does without the cord. i also have it mounted to the back of my girls cage via velcro...
    like so...

dont mind her, she was going through a "snurtle" stage.
