Bulk Aspen
For some reason I've been thinking of using Aspen, if not for my ball pythons, at least for my corns, as my Zim loves to burrow into the substrate. Right now she's just on paper towels. Paper towels are cheap and easy for me. I pay about $6 for 8 rolls and they last me a while (I change them 1-2x per week), but Aspen just seems like it would help them thermoregulate better, give them more security, and I've heard you can simply spot clean (remove obvious feces and urate) and change it completely less often than using newspaper or paper towel.
I can get aspen for snakes at work, but normally its around $7 for a small bag. I have a lot of tubs to fill. They have aspen for small animals for a little more money but you get a big bag. I think it's around $10-15 per big bag (can't remember the exact amount). I've been to Southern States, a farm/garden supply store near me and they have aspen designed for horse stalls and such. They advertise it as kiln dried aspen. Would this work for snake bedding? Or it is not soft enough and possibly dusty? It is only $7 per huge bag.
In the end, I may just stick with paper towels as that is what is working for me right now. But it is something I've been thinking about lately and thought I'd get some opinions on whether that aspen would be safe, or would it be better to use the small animal or snake aspen.

Re: Bulk Aspen
I know you can use non animal specific cypress mulch but you have to bake it to ensure their are no parasites or house invaders. Plus make sure its cypress only and not a mix. But As far as aspen specifically i'm not sure.

Aspen is Aspen
Just depends on whether you like the dust content and style of shaving the company makes

I'm not sure how dusty this aspen is. Would I have to worry about parasites with aspen made for horse stalls?

Re: Bulk Aspen
I'm not sure how much most feed stores sell their Aspen for, but the feed store where I purchase my bales of hay is where I also purchase my Aspen. I pay $6.00 for 3200 cu in of kiln dried Aspen with a "medium" level of dust. Kiln drying Aspen is done so to reduce bacteria and, I believe, to make it slightly more absorbent. It's cheaper and easier to upkeep than paper towels, in my opinion. I only use paper towels in my quarantine tub now. As for your Corns possibly preferring it, that's likely. The Rosy Boa I had for a short time preferred burrowing into the Aspen, as opposed to using his hides.
