Help with a presentation - Issues to cover
As some of you may already know, I go to a marine biology academy. So obviously, it's a very science-oriented school. Every summer, the school offers students from 6th - 8th grade the opportunity to take part in a week-long experience. They go out and learn about the local ecosystems and learn about how to work in the field and everything like that.
This year, my friend and I are volunteering to help out by doing a presentation. The presentation is on reptiles, specifically captive ones. The project consists of a Powerpoint slideshow and a hands-on session with live reptiles.
So far these are the topics covered in the Powerpoint:
- Why reptiles should be respected, not feared
- The odds of a reptile killing you as opposed to other factors
- Good and bad reasons to get a reptile (as in, if this is why you want one, don't get one)
- Are you ready for a reptile?
- Methods for buying/adopting a reptile
- Good and bad beginner species
- Profiles of 4 lizard species, 4 snake species, and 3 turtle species
And these are some things we plan to cover:
- What to do if you can't keep your reptile any more
- The Everglades problem
- Things to be careful of (mites, rat bites, burns, tape, etc)
- Possibly anti-reptile legislation
Obviously, this will all be worded in such a way that pre-teens can understand it. Anyway, I was wondering if you guys had any other suggestions for topics we should discuss. So...shoot!

Maybe talk about medical issues that can arise from improper husbandry? Some things you can touch on is why they need a heat source, why certain woods should not be used, why heat rocks should not be used on snakes, just things that we see on here that are common misunderstandings when it comes to reptile keeping? Good luck! Sounds like a fun project
Edit: just saw....could be grouped into the things to look out for part lol
