    My BP's hide

ok, i got my first BP about 2 hours ago, he has been in his cage. for the first hour he spent it trying to escape and like exploring around. not franticly but slow and just always moving, now hes chilling on his hide not in it. is that normal? he hasnt entered the hide once yet. is there a possible problem w the hide? It's my first snake and im a little excited and just want the best for him. tell me if i need to chill lol. thanks! :)

He will be ok... Give him some time and he should settle in. Mine usually take a few hours to settle in and curl up in their hides. Chance are there is nothing wrong with the hide if it is nice and snug for him.....

He's just getting acclimated. If he isn't in his hide in a week, then maybe something is wrong with your husbandry. He's going to be trying to escape, and he's likely very stressed. So just give him time, watch him form his habits. Then if you have concerns, feel free to post them.

Can you give us more info on your set up?

Also it's norm for a snake to do all those things when it gets thrown into a new environment. If you were took out of your house and put in another house with a whole new set-up wouldn't you wanna check things out?

    Re: My BP's hide

True i would, my setup is a simple 10 gallon tank with nice wallpaper stickering covering the back and sides of the tank (i heard they enjoy the privacy) I use aspen substrate, a med size exo terra hide (warm side) and a zoo med 10-20 gallon heater. Also, i have an old cool whip container with a cutout on it for cold side hide. a Tupperware from the kitchen for a water bowl (much to my older bro and his GF dislike) and a top with locks. the thermometer im getting from Lowes tommorow, its called accurite i believe. thats all though.

You could just get a dimmer. Thats what I use for my snakes and they work great. You can get it for 10$ at lowes.

You really need at the very least a dimmer for the UTH, I have the same UTH for my one tank (the rest are on a rack) and it reads over 130* on the bottom of the substrate, which they normally move out of the way. You can easily have a burned snake with those temps, I highly advise a dimmer/rheostat/thermostat. One of the three, your digital thermometer will not lower the heat your UTH puts off....

The Accurite is a thermometer and only measures the temperature. A Thermostat will control the heat output of your UTH and you can get a Reptitemp 500R for about $30 which will work great on a one snake setup. I used one for a year in the past and never had a problem. A active ball python is a stressed ball python which is normal for a new snake in a new environment. Leave him completely alone for at least a week before trying to feed him so he can get settled in! Congrats and good luck!
