    Air purifier idea (opinions wanted)

Ok so I breed rats, mice and ASFs and while I'm pretty diligent about changing tubs the smell still bothers me. It's not strong or terribly offensive but it's still there. So I have an idea for an air purifier of sorts and would lime opinions.

I have a small window fan and it has two 8" fans mounted side by side. It's pretty rough looking and beat up so I plan to take it apart to salvage the fans as they work fine. I'm planning to build a melamine box approx. 10" x 10" x 20" long. In the box I will start by placing furnace filter at one end the I'm going to build a hardware cloth box 10"x10"x2" and mount that inside the box in front of the furnace filter and fill it with charcoal, in front of that I will place another furnace filter and then mount the fan in front of that. Lastly in front of the fan I will mount one of those whole house air fresheners (the kind that are intended to go inside your duct work to make the house smell good lol).

This design would force air to be cleaned by the furnace filters deodorized by the charcoal and the scented by the air freshener. My plan is to set the box on top of my rat racks and plug it into a timer so that it will turn on every hour for 5 minutes turning the air over in the room once or twice and shutting back off.

Couple questions for those with an opinion; first, does anyone know of a better medium to use than charcoal? If I could find something else I might use it instead or even in addition to the charcoal. Second, I'll just have to experiment to be sure but do you think it should run more or less than 5 min/hr? Lastly, do you
See anything inherently flawed in the design that have missed that would make it not work?

Thanks for looking guys and I'll try and post pics as I go along and keep ya posted on my progress.

I can't speak to the design, I have never tried anything like this myself it sounds good past that I can offer no use full information.

I have use a volcanic deodorizer in place of a charcoal medium. It worked quite well and is re-usable it needs to be soaked over night in salt water to re-charge it.

I got mine at Lee Valley a Canadian retail store, here is a link to the product, maybe you can find something similar local to you. They do ship worldwide but be careful of the pricing, often you can do better if you can find it elsewhere.

    I hope this helps some.

Rats have very sensitive respiratory systems, I'm not sure I would "scent" the returning air if your box works.
I have a 20inch box fan venting outwards 24/7 in my rat room, works wonders

That's actually a pretty good point I may just stick to DEodorizing. Lol

Kitedemon. I have found a few sites selling similar products I may order one. I'm hoping to find something local to avoid shipping but may just order it.
