    How long after they pip?

How long, on average, does it take for them to absorb the yolk after they pip? Ours pipped yesterday at noon, and it's still sitting there in the egg. I thought I've heard on videos that it's about 12 hours...Any info?

What are any signs of a twisted umbilical cord? At what point do you worry about checking for that? We can't really see if it's twisted or not. How would we know, if the snake covers all of it?

I just don't want to go rootin' around in there and mess with it, which would probably make it more likely to twist, or screw up...I hate being a newbie, but gotta start some time...

It can take up to 2 days for them to emerge. Do you cut them or did they pip on their own? If they pip on their own then they should come out a little sooner! I wouldn't worry about it and just give them some more time!

Well, I guess we waited too long. It died. It did not have a twisted umbilical cord. It just never absorbed the yolk. Wish I could get a more clear understanding of what we should have done--how to know if we should have taken it out and force fed it or something... I just don't know...

It's going to sound very cliche' to say this but experience is the best thing to have in these instances. without having the animal in hand it's hard to say because each animal is different. I've had one or two that I've had to intervene with and every time its different. One time they will heal up and eat just fine others will need to be force fed before their first shed..

Sorry for the little one but it happens like a good friend of mine says "the more you do the more you see"..

Typically if a snake hasn't emerged with in a day or so of pipping then I will start looking in the egg to see if there is something up..

Re: How long after they pip?

If you start looking in the egg for problems, what are you looking for? If the umbilical isn't twisted, what do you look for? What do you look for?

This baby wasn't kinked at all. The pattern was just very cool on its back. It looked completely fine as far as shape and development.

It depends on how early they pipped. I had a clutch pip at day 52 so they stayed in the egg for over 3 days.

It can take several days for them to come out, I have some making their way out 5 days after cutting, it happens but in the meantime I monitor them, usually you will see them moving sticking their head out etc especially in the last days.

Umbilical issues are often hard to see because of the position they are in and sadly even if you pulled the hatchling out and untangle the umbilical it's still does not guarantee that the animal will make it.

Just don't let this discourage you or give you doubt it just one of the downside of breeding things like this happens sometimes.
