    Humidity Hide

Should there only be a humidity hide present when the BP is about to shed. I'm having difficulty maintaining regular humidity levels, because of a heating lamp. I need it to maintain some of the temperatures. He's got a UTH, so its not his main source of heating.

Anyways, he only uses the hide on the hot side. Should I put wet moss in there, since it doesn't dry up nearly as fast when its in the hide? Will it get too humid in there? I figured since he spends about 60% of his time in there, that it would help him out. Or is this only a good idea when he's going to shed?

    Thanks

You can go ahead and make a humid hide if you want to. Do you have two hides in your enclosure for the snake? He really needs two hides so that he can thermoregulate. I just ditched my tank and got a tub for my snake. I am not having issues with humidity anymore. I'm not saying that you have to do this, I am just telling you what worked for me.

Yeah he's got two hides. He usually just basks and climbs around on his cold hide one. He refuses to go in it for some reason. I placed two layers of tin foil, and duct tape, on about 80% of the top of his cage. Hasn't really helped with humidity. But I'll try putting it in. I'll likely stop if theres condensation in the hide.

Some moss inside the hides should help. I only have one bp in a tank, the others are in a rack, but when I notice after he clears up from his blue stage, about 2 days later I give him a warm bath for about 10 minutes and he has consistently shedded that same night. It may be something to try since you use a heat lamp (which I don't and I still have trouble with humidity...)

I do this same thing when mine go into blue. What type of hides do you use? I've had a wooden one mold on me before using this technique

The heat lamps already over the water dish. I think thats whats helping keeping it at about a constant 40%. I think people misunderstood, its my fault. I wasn't talking about doing it just for a shed, but keeping moss in his hides, all the time. I'm just concerned he'll develop a RI, from it getting too high, all the time.

I bought a "humidity hut" back when my Pied 1.0 was still in his cage because of the same problems maintaining the humidity levels. It was made by one of the Huge Reptile dist's. I forgot which one. It was basically a bowel with a hole that had a lid that could be removed. A day or two after clearing up from "the blue's" I would fill it up with Sphag that was soaked in water, and the first time I put it in there, he knew right away what it was. found him in there the next morning with a perfect shed balled up in side of it. Might wanna give it a shot!

The Reptile store here said if I couldn't find it, you can improvise by using a tupperware container and just make sure you make it non-see-thru if it already is, and to use a lighter to torch the edges of where ever you cut the hole out so the edges aren't too sharp. Hope this helps!

    Re: Humidity Hide

hmm then it might be too much if you're thinking of doing it all the time. what is the humidity in the hide with moss in it? if it's too high it might be an issue, cos then the snake can't choose to hide and be in in adequate temperature and not have the choice of humidity, if that makes sense...
i cover 3/4 the top with a damp towel and cover that with foil, but it needs to be rehydrated every few days, and i still mist daily and that keeps it in the mid 60% range... it's definitely tough to get it right with a screen top, takes much more maintenance!
