UTH Troubles

I know that UTHs are one of the preferred methods of heating snake enclosures. However, this is the second time I've used one and the second time it didn't get the temps anywhere near high enough.

I had a 5 watt pad for my python that came with his 20 long tank. It only heated the ground up to about 72-ish. Now I have another pad for my boa, and again, it's only heating up to about 72 - 75 degrees. I added a heat lamp to both tanks to raise the temperatures. Directly under the light (about 3 or 4 in) gets to about 102, and after another few inches it gets around 85. Under that (the boa is in an 18 in high, the python in a 12 in, so the python stays around 85) relies on the pad, which again gets to 72.

Those of you who only use UTHs, how do you get your enclosures above 80?

Btw, using an ExoTerra digital thermohygrometer, so I'm fairly certain the readings are accurate.

I always use flexwatt and I never had an issue with temps. I also used a proexotics temp gun to take my surface temps.

I'm using Reptitherm for my boa right now. I don't remember what the python's was (it had no effect on the temp in the tank so I let my friend borrow it).

I am able to keep my tub temps just fine with my UTH. In fact, I have to control it with a thermostat so it doesn't get too hot. Let me ask you this... If you place your hand directly on the glass, is it warm to the touch?

Hmmmm, never used Reptitherm's before so I can't really comment on them, sorry I can say if you got some flexwatt you would be very happy with it and have no troubles getting your surface temps up and you would need a thermostat to make sure your temps don't get too hot

Yes, more so on the glass than on the substrate (obviously). I just moved the probe back down to the ground instead of the middle, and it's now hovering around 80 - 85. I guess it just took longer than usual to kick in? I'll keep an eye on it and see where it goes.

Hahaha. I didn't even notice. I'm a transplant from Kansas City and hopefully won't be here too much longer.
