blue tounged skink, a good choice?

so, i was thinking of getting one as ive read about all their needs and their diet. however, i have yet to actually see one in real life!

what are your impressions of this sociable "little" skink? do you have one or have any stories to tell that might help me on the way? ;D

and also, its very hard to find one in sweden it seems, ive checked the most usual shops and breeders nearby with no result. I would be very happy if i could get some help in finding a place to buy a happy, non-wild captured and healthy baby BTS.

on another note, ill be trying to handle it a lot, for how long do you recommend having it out in winter and early spring here, as my room can be down to 16 degrees C. ( while summers are 20 - 30 with good basking sun)

Re: blue tounged skink, a good choice?

I haven't owned one, but from my few experiences handling and seeing them they've been very sweet and quirky creatures. I'm a little hesitant of the four legged herps just because i've got a thing about claws and skittering around and i'm not really sure how well they handle, but if i could pick one right now that i think would definitely get a bts .

as far as your other questions though, i've never owned one so hopefully someone else can help you there

If you have the time and the money to care for a BTS then I'd say it's pretty good choice for a lizard.

I will state that I have never owned one before, but have cared for some at the reptile sanctuary I volunteer at.. I've even broken up a fight between two (which I will say I caught at the very start of it because I was supervising them until the event in case it happened).

They're pretty awesome lizards, and the super calm ones at the reptile shows are so much fun to pet LOL! If you're looking for some, check if there's any reptile shows/expos that are taking place this year. You might find a lot better luck at an expo and a healthier animal from a reputable breeder.

Good luck, keep up the research

thank you very much for your opinions n__n

i will make sure to only keep one, they eat a lot too so it will surely be just one XD ( if i dont decide to breed with someone elses, the small ones seem rather easy to handle and keep )

i know there will be a reptile expo in may.....but its rather far away from now and im impatient lol

I looooove Blue Tongue Skinks!! Almost bought one a couple years ago at a convention, I keep kicking myself for not going through with it. One of his prettiest yearlings lost the tip of his tail and no one wanted him, so he said if no one bought him he would give him to us for 40 because we had been talking with him the whole expo. We didn't go through cause we didn't have the right size enclosure, and what do you know, that next day we got a free one big enough. Oh well, life happens in funny ways!

I like them because they are sturdy, I feel better about handling them than I do about my leopard geckos. Maybe it's the thick feeling of their scales compared to the soft squishy skin of the geckos!!

I like them! Go for it if you want!
