    Pratice

Hi guys I was thinking of getting a low priced female that will be ready to breed next season in order to get practice in before my project itself takes off in 2 years. Is this a good idea, I will be breeding 4 females in that year and want to get a started with a smaller "practice" session what do u guys think?

There's really nothing to practice...your part is fairly simple...and the snakes know their part pretty well too... Instead of spending the money on a breedable female, I'd put it towards an incubator if you don't already have one, or a hatchling rack. Or more adult racks for your holdbacks...or a good proportional thermostat...etc...

    That cat's something I can't explain...

Gotcha...makes sense. Also...keep in mind that you plan on breeding 4 females...that doesn't necessarily mean 4 clutches. This place will be a wealth of info once you get started...

I think practicing is a good idea. I pretty much did exactly what you are planning to do. I bought a breedable normal female before breeding season started and had my first clutch with her. It was disastrous to say the least. Long story short four babies made it to the end, one died in the egg, the other three I cut open, and they were a mess. Deformed, kinked, split bellies, it was awful. I had to cull the three that lived because there was absolutely no hope for them. This year I have four girls that are breeding for me and I'm very thankful for my experience last year. I made a new incubator, I'm going substrateless, and hopefully those two things fix whatever problem I had last year.

When you get your female get her early in the year. Some females won't breed after the stress of shipping, I'm not sure what the odds are, but it's something to be aware of. I was lucky enough to purchase my female from a friend who lived nearby so she didn't have to be shipped.

    Good luck!

Dont get too ahead of yourself. While ball pythons are relatively easy to breed, there are a ton of variables that are completely out of your control (slugs, infertile, females just not going for a season). Assuming you are going to be flooded with eggs might end up in disappointment.

I am by no way assuming I will be crawling with awesomeness I just want to better my chances at getting better results. I am planning for the worst and the worst in this senerio is all pythons having successful clutches and me being a complete newb and losing lives because im not properly prepared.

I say you keep doing your homeworks and only start when you are ready. Those are precious lives and should not be messed around with.

man honestly you can learn everything you need to on this forum. just skim the breeding section and look at all the topics. of course you will have questions but that's why you're a member here and most everyone will give you good straightforward answers that will coach you're growth as a bp breeder. owning ball pythons for a few years is a definite plus as it allows you to better understand their behaviors outside of the breeding world. I have owned a female normal for 7 years and this is my first year breeding because I feel like I have the proper information, time, and cash flow to support the hobby. just sit back and look at it and if you're ready then we are ready to help ya along the way.

    hope this helps
