    New Pick-ups

No pics til they are settled in, plus both are in shed right now.

Last friday we drove 4 hours to pick up a 100% het albino '06 pair. Now the guy didn't have a scale but said they were both breeding weight, from the pics I got the female looked a little thinner than I'd like but nothing too bad. Then we get out there....

My early '10 is bigger than these guys!!! The were tiny, no where near the size they should be for their age. When I finally got them weighed they came in at 584(f) and 589(m). If the price hadn't been what it was, we wouldn't have taken them at all.

Now we've got to work on getting them up to proper size. Any advice on this?

The previous owner said he was feeding them med. rats weekly but I don't see how that is even possible. Should I try and feed them 2 small rats per feeding or put them on a 5 day schedule? They're always in feeding mode and i'm guessing its because they're starving!!

wow. Just wow. Yeah, try getting them on a 5-day schedule, but make sure you have them checked for parasites too, because if they've got something like that in them they could eat all day every day and not put on weight.

    Re: New Pick-ups

I would be wary of them being actual 100% het albinos. If he lied about the weights, he can certainly lie about the genetics. A pair of 100% het albinos are pretty cheap already... hope you didn't pay much more than you would for normals. Also was the 4 hour drive total or just one way? Pretty long drive for a pair of het albinos that might take a year or more to get into breeding shape.

He had the papers with photo ID from the original breeder so I know the ages. I'm not sure if he was outright lying or just didn't know what he was talking about. Trust me, we didn't pay much. We thought we were getting breeder-sized hets so the drive would have been worth it since it's too cold to ship right now.

    Re: New Pick-ups

    Hi,

If he has been underfeeding them don't pound food into them straight away but ease into an increased food load.

Start off with a small meal and see how they handle it and then gradually increase either the size or the frequency.

If you jump the gun and just stuff them as much as they will eat right now there is a chance their body won't be able to cope and you might get regurges.
