Do you make holes in your rack tubs or not?

I planning to build my own rack (for adult bp's) with no lids on the tubs, and I was wondering if you guys make holes in your tubs or the space between the tub and upper shelf is enough - I'm planning to use 2 cd's as spacers while building and flexwatt as heating on the belly side .
So would you make some holes (and if so - where?) or not?

It depends on the humidity in your area. I initially made holes in the tubs of my Animal Plastics rack but found it completely unnecessary. If you find condensation on the inside of your tubs, then I would drill/solder holes (near the lip of the tub). Good luck and take pics for us when you're done.

I have to concur. It depends on your particular environment. So long as there is a gap between the lip of the tub and the top of the rack, you'll have a healthy airflow as far as oxygen exchange is concerned. The rest of the equation depends on how your local humidity is. If you live in a dry place...then you may not want holes. If your place is frequently humid, you may need holes to keep it from getting too much.

Personally, I'd try them without holes first and see how it goes. If the humidity stays constantly above 60%, or if you frequently see condensation building up inside the tubs...then I'd pull them out and drill/solder a few holes. Repeat the test and drill more holes if necessary until you get it balanced just right.

It really depends on the humidity where you are. This is something you have to figure out on your own with some experimentation.

Just remember to not put a load of holes in right away. You can always make more holes, but you can't take them away.


In my CB-70 racks, for example, the room humidity is anywhere between 25-35%. The tubs have 0 space from the top of the tub to the shelf. I have 7 rows of 24 holes and the humidity inside the tubs are about 70%.

However, in my hatchling rack 6qt, there's 4 rows of 24 holes and the humidity is about 60%.

If the humidity outside of the tub is 50 - 60%, inside will be higher. I bet you will need some holes.

Depends on the rack and tubs themselves that are being used.

If you have a rack with and there are no gap between the tub and the rack you will need some holes.

If you use racks such as ARS freedom breeder or vision no holes are required.

If you do require holes go easy and monitor your humidity before adding too many.

Well actually I checked today and humidity was 37%, but in summer it might be higher .
I will just try without holes and if it appears that humidity in tubs is too high I will then start making some holes
