accu-rite...does anyone else have this one?

this is the accu-rite model i aquired. i have a question about it & was hoping someone here also has this model and can help me figure out the question i have. first the picture of it...

my issue (if it would even be considered an issue)

the top part displays time (and apparently a temp too), the middle displays a temp that is measured with a cord and probe (why the need to display 2 different temps?) & the bottom displays a humidity percentage.
i noticed last night when i was applying the new velcro to the back of it, the top # changed from time to a temperature when i accidently pressed the temp/clock button. the thing is, the cord that was attached to the unit measured temps with a probe but i cut that off since i use a temp gun to measure my temps (dont worry, i double checked with the company's technical support to make sure that snipping that cord off wouldn't affect the unit's ability to measure humidity, it doesn't so i'm good. plus, that cord would've been more of a hassle anyways)
now, i've set the time so we're good there, the middle display says "LO" all the time cuz thats where the corded temp # would be but i cut that off so...yeah & my bottom is displaying a humidity percentage.
my issue is, how was that thing able to display a temperature when i cut the cord off?
ok i JUST now caught that i was just explaining the whole thing about the cord and the top being able to display a temp as well but here's where my confusion comes in, the info/packaging did not say anything about a temperature sensor inside the unit...i've read here before, about the accurites being able to take 2 different temps...
is one of those temps the ambient temp?
i hope i havent confused anyone with all this but i'm pretty stumped right now...

I have the same one. I figure that since it takes humidity readings with the corded sensor cut off that it must have an internal sensor for that, so I would presume that sensor also takes the ambient temp as well. I use mine with the sensor still attached, and a temp gun. i would check with tech support for for the definitive answer. It also seems like a pain to have to keep pressing that button to get an ambient temp.

Re: accu-rite...does anyone else have this one?

    Hi,

The base unit has sensors inside it for temp and humidity - the probe only does temp.

So most people put the unit at the cool end to get cool end ambients and humidity and run the probe inside the hot end hide to get the temp there.

Why would you cut off the probe? It kind of defeats the point of buying something that can monitor both sides of the tank at the same time.

Re: accu-rite...does anyone else have this one?

well see, when i talked to the tech support ppl about the cord they said the humidity sensor is inside the unit but didnt mention anything about a temp sensor since we were talking about the cord.
overall, it was better for me to cut the cord off so that i dont have cords going all over the place posing the risk of my snake getting tangled up in it.
i dont really worry too much about ambient temps unless i know they're low due to the house/room being really cold but that doesnt happen cuz i keep my house's heater going and its set to stay at 75 which is warm enough.

Re: accu-rite...does anyone else have this one?

The Acu-Rites are not designed for reptile tanks. They are designed for houses. Ideally, you would mount it next to a window or door. There is a temp and humidity sensor inside the unit, which would give you your inside humidity and temp. The probe would be ran through the door or window and provide you with the outside temp....

The temp on the top reading is measured at the base, along with the humidity, the middle number is the reading that would be measured with the probe. Now that the probe is cut off the 2 temp readings should be pretty close.
Dr. Del...I actually suggested she cut the cord for safety of the snake. She has a temp gun to rely on for surface temps and is really using the accurite only for ambients and humidity.

Re: accu-rite...does anyone else have this one?

dr. del - i talked to several people including frankie here about the risks/benefits of that cord before i snipped it off. i didnt just go "oh a cord...snip." lol. so far everything is looking good right now and i monitor the temps with my temp gun (almost to the point of being neurotic, lol). the temps are where they need to be on both sides, i know the humidity is perfect cuz my girl has had a perfect shed just last thursday, she's eating very well and...um well yeah that's it. so really with how good everything is going my snipping the cord off has had no ill-effects. no worries.
everyone else - thx for the answers. i will check that ambient temp more often now that i know i can, lol.
oh and i finally got the accu-rite mounted up on the back glass with velcro instead of it sitting on the bottom of the terrarium. my mounting it up like that only sparked the snake's curiosity and she went climbing all over it checking it out.
